Red Storm will open in Wilmington on Feb. 18
QUEENS, N.Y. – Entering his third season at the helm of the Red Storm baseball program, Head Coach Mike Hampton has released his team's schedule for the upcoming 2022 campaign.
After having its 2020 season canceled after 14 games and seeing the COVID-19 pandemic drastically alter its 2021 slate, the Red Storm will look to undertake a full 56-game schedule beginning on Feb. 18 in Wilmington, N.C. The Johnnies are scheduled to play four games in three days that weekend, beginning with a 12 p.m. Friday first pitch against Middle Tennessee State. The Red Storm will then play both MTSU and host UNC Wilmington in a Saturday doubleheader before closing out the weekend with a single game against the Seahawks at Brooks Field on Sunday.
St. John's will then head west for a spring break trip that features a pair of four-game series. Beginning on Friday, Feb. 25, St. John's will play four contests in as many days at the University of Oregon, a team that went 39-16 and hosted an NCAA Regional in 2021. The trip will mark the program's second to Eugene, as the Ducks swept a three-game set from the Johnnies during the BIG EAST Championship season of 2015.
After taking on the Ducks, the Red Storm will venture south to San Francisco for a four-game set with the Dons. The series, which is set to run from March 3-6, will mark the first-ever meetings between the programs.
St. John's will make its New York City debut on March 9 when it kicks off a 13-game Kaiser Stadium homestand against Hofstra. The Red Storm will then welcome Manhattan for three-game weekend series beginning on March 11 before keeping it local with a midweek contest against LIU on March 15 and a three-game series against Sacred Heart from March 18-20. A midweek home contest with Wagner awaits the Johnnies on March 23 before Quinnipiac comes to Queens for three games beginning on March 25. The Red Storm will then wrap its homestand with a March 30 showdown against Columbia, the first meeting between the two teams since 2019.
St. John's will play its final non-conference series beginning on Friday, April 1, when the Red Storm travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., for a three-game set with reigning MAAC Champion Rider.
On April 5, the Johnnies will then host Fairfield for a midweek contest at The Jack on April 5 before kicking off BIG EAST play at reigning league champion UConn on Friday, April 8. After a 2021 season that featured four-game conference series, all league sets will be composed of only three outings apiece this season.
The Red Storm will venture to Hempstead for a midweek contest against Hofstra on April 12 before welcoming Creighton to Queens for a modified series over Easter Weekend. The Bluejays and the Johnnies will play a single game on Thursday, April 14, before a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon wraps the series between the last two teams to win BIG EAST Championships prior to COVID.
St. John's will host Fairleigh Dickinson on April 20 before welcoming another BIG EAST foe, Butler, to Kaiser Stadium for a three-game series beginning on April 22.
The Red Storm will then face Iona in midweek action at The Jack on April 27 before hitting the road for seven straight games beginning with a BIG EAST series against Villanova starting on April 29 in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
On May 3, the Red Storm will play its first Northeast night game of the season when it travels to Rockland to take on Marist in a 6 p.m. first pitch. The Red Storm will then stay on the road for its weekend set, traveling to South Orange to take on longtime conference rival Seton Hall, the most frequently played opponent in program history.
The Red Storm will return to Kaiser Stadium on Wednesday, May 11, when it hosts Iona for the second time in three weeks at 7 p.m.
St. John's will host its final home games of the season the following weekend, welcoming Georgetown for a BIG EAST series beginning on May 13.
The Red Storm will then play a Tuesday contest at Wagner before traveling to Cincinnati for a three-game set against Xavier to wrap the regular season beginning on Thursday, May 19.
The BIG EAST Baseball Championship will return to Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, beginning on Thursday, May 26. St. John's won the first BIG EAST Tournament contested at the facility in 2018 and qualified again in 2019. Last season, the Red Storm missed the postseason for the first time since 2003, snapping a league-record streak of 16-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament appearances.
Over the course of its history stretching back more than a century, the St. John's baseball program has been one of the most consistently successful program in the country. The Johnnies have competed in the NCAA Tournament 37 times, good enough for the 10th highest total all-time alongside USC and Oklahoma. Six of those NCAA berths resulted in a College World Series appearance. Since 2004, St. John's has earned an NCAA berth 10 times in 17 chances.
Since the BIG EAST began sponsoring baseball in 1985, no program has come close to matching the success of the Johnnies. The Red Storm has won nine BIG EAST Tournament titles and nine BIG EAST Regular Season crowns, each of which leads the conference by a wide margin. Among current BIG EAST members, Connecticut's four conference titles rank second.
