Red Storm to Open BIG EAST Play on Thursday at UConn

The Johnnies and Huskies will play on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. ET
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2021) – 452 days after capturing the 2019 BIG EAST Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the St. John's volleyball team will resume conference play this week when it travels to UConn for a two-match road swing.
The Johnnies and Huskies will faceoff on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. inside Gampel Pavilion.
St. John's enters league play with the second most BIG EAST titles among current teams in the conference behind Creighton. The Johnnies secured three regular-season crowns in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and two tournament championships in 2007 and 2019.
The Red Storm (3-1) closed out its 2021 spring non-conference slate with a three-set sweep over Sacred Heart and a five-set victory against Stony Brook.
Junior Ariadni Kathariou was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 16 after collecting 15 blocks across St. John's two victories. Kathariou recorded a match-high eight blocks against the Seawolves, and another match-high of seven blocks in the Johnnies' win over the Pioneers.
Right-side hitter Rachele Rastelli racked up 23 kills in St. John's win over Stony Brook, the most by a BIG EAST player this season, hitting at a .568 clip. She also registered nine kills and notched a .533 hitting percentage in the Red Storm's sweep of Sacred Heart.
Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Efrosini Alexakou currently ranks second in the BIG EAST with 3.93 kills per set. Alexakou has put down 13 or more kills in each of St. John's four matches. The junior outside hitter recorded the most kills in a three-set match by a league player this season with 16 kills against the Pioneers.
Tiziana Baumrukova enters this Thursday's match ranked first in the conference with 11.07 assists per set. The senior setter dished out 57 helpers against the Seawolves, the most assists in a single match since Erica Di Maulo notched 60 in the Red Storm's five-set win against DePaul in 2018.
UConn (0-1) will play its second match of the 2021 spring season on Thursday after falling to Temple in four sets on Jan. 30.
The Huskies placed third in this year's preseason coaches' poll behind unanimous top pick St. John's, and Villanova. UConn posted a 12-16 overall record (6-10 AAC) as a member of the American Athletic Conference in 2019.
Junior outside hitter Caylee Parker led the Huskies with 309 kills and 238 digs last season. Parker was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 2 after recording 17 kills on a .343 hitting percentage in UConn's 3-1 loss at Temple.
Sophomore Jasmine Davis ranked second on the Huskies' roster with 203 kills and 220 digs during her freshman campaign in 2019.
