Rivals will play a three-game weekend series at Red Storm Field
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will open up the BIG EAST portion of its 2021 schedule this weekend when DePaul visits Queens for a three game series.
Saturday's doubleheader with the Blue Demons will get underway at 12 p.m. with game two to follow while first pitch for Sunday's single contest is also scheduled for noon. All three contests can be streamed via ESPN3 with live stats available via RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm's series with DePaul marks the first BIG EAST contests for both teams since the 2019 season. The Johnnies last matchup with a conference foe came way back on May 10 of that year, a BIG EAST Tournament Semifinal loss to Villanova. In that same season, DePaul captured its third consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Championship, despite the Red Storm taking the regular season crown.
St. John's comes off of a midweek split of its doubleheader at Fordham, as they dropped game one in five innings, 13-3, but followed it up with a thrilling victory, 4-3, in game two. Melanie Santos' first career base knock, a pinch-hit RBI single, in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in game two. Kayla Kmett worked 6.1 innings of three-run ball in the circle to earn the win before Angela Saric came on to strand the tying and game-winning runs on base in the seventh to earn the save.
Graduate student Marissa Rizzi and junior Peyton Cody have led the way for the Red Storm offensively through five games. The two have combined to hit .558 and have reached base in 23 of 38 trips to the plate. They have also had a hand in 21 of the 31 runs that the team has pushed across the plate this season.
Rizzi's performance against Rhode Island and UMass-Lowell a weekend ago earned her BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, as she hit .625 while reaching base safely in nine of her 12 plate appearances. The Red Storm first baseman's batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage all rank atop the BIG EAST, while she and Cody are tied for second in the conference with three home runs.
DePaul enters the weekend 7-7 on the season, having begun nonconference play a month ago on Feb. 12. The Blue Demons most recently split their doubleheader with Bradley on Monday, taking game one, 4-1, before dropping game two, 2-1. The three-time reigning BIG EAST Champions are led by Skylor Hilger, who is hitting .357 on the season.
Following the weekend series, the Johnnies will look toward a St. Patrick's Day matchup with Hofstra at home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Red Storm will then cross the Hudson River to battle Seton Hall in South Orange next weekend.
