The Johnnies swept the Pirates to secure their second conference win of the season
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (March 12, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team secured its second conference victory of the season on Friday night, earning a three-set sweep over Seton Hall at Walsh Gymnasium.
The Red Storm captured all three frames, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-21.
Junior Efrosini Alexakou recorded her fifth straight double-double, racking up a match-high 17 kills while collecting 11 digs. Alexakou also posted a .387 hitting percentage and added two blocks. The Johnnies' outside hitter has notched a double-double in six of the team's nine matches this spring. She currently ranks second in the BIG EAST with 4.43 kills per set.
Tiziana Baumrukova sent out 34 helpers and registered seven digs. The senior setter leads the conference with 11.65 assists per set, good enough for sixth in the nation.
Right-side hitter Rachele Rastelli tallied 12 kills, four blocks, three digs and one service ace.
Iliana Rodriguez led both teams with 15 digs, as Ariadni Kathariou turned in a match-high seven blocks.
St. John's (6-3, 2-2 BIG EAST) got off to a slow start in the first set, as Seton Hall (3-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) took an early 9-5 lead. The Red Storm quickly found its footing, rattling off an 11-3 run to take a four-point edge, 16-12. An attack error helped the Pirates cut the deficit to two, 17-15, but a 5-0 stanza from the Johnnies set the score at 22-15. Seton Hall picked up the next point, 22-16, before an attack error and a pair of kills from Rastelli helped St. John's secure the opening frame, 25-16.
A kill from Seton Hall's Tsvetelina Ilieva cut the Johnnies' lead to one early in the second set, 6-5. However, the Red Storm responded with an 8-3 run to go on top by six, 14-8. Seton Hall fought its way back within one late in the frame, 19-18, but a kill from Alexakou capped off a 5-0 spurt to put the Johnnies at match point, 24-18. After the Pirates scored on the next play, 24-19, Rastelli put one into the floor to give St. John's the second frame, 25-19, and a 2-0 match lead.
The Pirates jumped out in front by four to begin the third, 7-3, but the Red Storm scored eight of the next 10 points to take the lead, 11-9. A kill from Seton Hall's Perri Lucas knotted the score, 14-14, before St. John's went on a 7-2 run to establish a five-point deficit, 21-16. Despite the Pirates scoring on two straight plays with the Johnnies sitting at match point, 24-21, a kill from Alexakou helped the Red Storm seize the third frame, 25-21, and a 3-0 sweep.
St. John's continues its two-match road swing with Seton Hall tomorrow night at Walsh Gymnasium. The start time is slated for 5 p.m.
