Red Storm loses its third one-goal game of the season
After taking down No. 13 Providence on Wednesday in Rhode Island, the St. John's men's soccer team was unable to make it two ranked wins in a row on Saturday in the nation's capital, falling to defending national champion No. 3 Georgetown, 1-0.
Freshman Chris Hegardt recorded the afternoon's lone goal off an assist from Derek Dodson in the 30th minute.
Luka Gavran and Jan Hoffelner logged two saves apiece in goal.
Shots were 11-4 in favor of Georgetown on the afternoon, but the margin for shots on goal was much slimmer, as the Hoyas sent five tries on target while the Johnnies did so with three of their four.
Jared Juleau sent the Red Storm's first chance of the game on target in the 10th minute from just outside the left edge of the box, but Georgetown keeper Giannis Nikopolidis came up with the save. Matt Chandler recorded the Johnnies' second chance off a corner kick in the 29th minute, but his shot came with his back to the goal from 10 yards out, making the stop an easy one for the reigning BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.
The Johnnies' best chance of the opening stanza came in the final minute of play, as Matt Forster crossed a ball in from the left side that found the head of Brandon Knapp near the top of the six. Knapp played it to Tani Oluwaseyi, but the junior's resulting header did not pack enough punch to beat the keeper.
St. John's created a few good scoring chances out of the intermission, including a shot from Drew Rosen in the 55th minute, but Georgetown managed to keep the Johnnies off the board.
Georgetown countered over the next several minutes, but Hoffelner came up big with a pair of stops to preserve the one-goal deficit.
Facing a one-goal deficit with 10 minutes remaining, St. John's began to throw everything it had at the Georgetown net, but Nikopolidis and the Hoyas managed to keep the Red Storm at bay. With two minutes to play, Johan Aquilon played a near-perfect ball into the box toward three red jerseys, but Nikopolidis skied and grabbed it to neutralize what was arguably the team's best scoring opportunity of the half.
The Red Storm will return to Belson Stadium on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest with Seton Hall. The game will air live on ESPN3.
