St. John’s Returns to Action against Rhode Island

The Johnnies and Rams will square off at 4 p.m. at Keaney Gymnasium
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 2, 2021) – After defeating UConn in four sets on Friday to secure its first conference win of the season, the St. John's volleyball team continues its three-match road stretch on Wednesday, taking on Rhode Island at Keaney Gymnasium.
The Johnnies and Rams will square off at 4 p.m. with live stats available at statbroadcast.com.
As a team, the Red Storm (4-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) leads the BIG EAST with 13.96 kills per set and 13.39 assists per set throughout its six matches this season.
Junior right-side hitter Rachele Rastelli racked up a career-high 25 kills in the Johnnies' four-set win over the Huskies, the most by a conference player this spring. Rastelli topped her mark of 23 kills that she posted in the Red Storm's five-set victory against Stony Brook on Feb. 14. The unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection has tallied 20 or more kills in each of St. John's last three matches and leads the league with 4.35 kills per set.
Efrosini Alexakou registered her third straight double-double against UConn on Friday, tallying 20 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Alexakou has notched four double-doubles this season and sits in fourth place on the conference leaderboard with 4.13 kills per set. The junior outside hitter is 43 kills away from reaching the 1,000-kill mark for her career.
Senior Tiziana Baumrukova dished out 57 helpers in the Red Storm's victory over the Huskies, the third most by a league player this season. Baumrukova has notched 50 or more assists in two of St. John's six matches. The Johnnies' setter also leads the BIG EAST with 11.74 assists per set.
Rhode Island (3-4, 2-1 A10) enters Wednesday's matchup coming off a three-set victory over George Washington on Saturday. The Rams were picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason coaches' poll, receiving 37 first-place votes.
Senior outside hitter Claire Chaplinksy currently leads the team with 93 kills. She has also collected 11 service aces and 70 digs. Redshirt senior Natale Zanellato, who led Rhode Island with 2.51 kills per set in 2019, has racked up 54 kills this spring.
Freshman Samantha Blahut was named the Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Week on Monday, tallying 11 kills with zero errors in the Rams' sweep of George Washington. Balhut also posted a .579 hitting percentage and added two solo blocks.
