Erin Brown, Kayla Kmett surrender three hits over two games in Red Storm victories
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 27, 2021) – A stellar day in the circle for the St. John's softball team led the Red Storm to a sweep of Providence, 4-0 and 4-1, in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Red Storm Field.
The Johnnies' (7-8, 4-4 BIG EAST) game one starter Erin Brown (2-3) and game two starter Kayla Kmett (4-4) combined to throw two complete games, with Brown's coming in shutout fashion. The pitching tandem allowed just three hits over 14 innings and struck out 12 Friars. Kmett worked a no-hitter through five innings in game two but lost it on a pinch-hit home run in the sixth, the only base knock that she would surrender in the contest.
Offensively, the Red Storm used two two-run innings in each game to gather all of its runs en route to the two victories. Gretchen Bowie led the way with three-extra base hits on the day and two runs scored in game two. Marissa Rizzi added three hits of her own and scored three runs, while Gabriella Conca hit the lone homer of the day for the Red Storm in game one.
Game One
Brown got the nod from Head Coach Bob Guerriero in game one and was strong from the get-go, as she did not allow a base runner until there were two outs recorded in the second inning. There was no score between the squads through two and a half innings before the Red Storm offense got jumpstarted in the third frame.
Kamryn Tiumalu led off the home half of the third with a walk and was pinch run for by Natalie Alheidt. After a Rizzi single into right, the Red Storm had two in scoring position when a wild pitch plated Alheidt. Following the wild pitch, Peyton Cody, who had two hits on the afternoon, singled to bring home Rizzi, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 lead after three.
After Brown worked a scoreless top of the fourth, the Red Storm offense came back for more, as Conca connected on her first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to bring the lead to 3-0. The Johnnies tacked on one more in the frame, as Elyse Morris was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI double from Bowie, bringing the lead to 4-0.
Brown did the work the rest of the way for the Red Storm, as she allowed just two base runners and no hits over the final three innings. The sophomore pitcher allowed just two hits en route to the victory, striking out four Providence hitters. Game one marked the second complete game shutout of her collegiate career, as she also threw one against Long Beach State a season ago, where she allowed four hits over seven innings.
Game Two
Brown's performance in game one was a tough act to follow for Kmett, who got the ball in game two, but she did just that. After a scoreless top of the first, the Red Storm got their senior pitcher some early offense. Bowie led the game off with a triple into the right-center field and came in to score on an RBI single from Rizzi. The clean-up hitter Cody followed that up with a safety-squeeze bunt and the Red Storm first baseman came sliding in to beat the tag, bringing the advantage to 2-0 after one.
Kmett seemed to get stronger as the game went on, as one of her four perfect innings came in the second frame. She ran into a bit of trouble in the third as a runner reached second base, but followed that up with one, two, three fourth and fifth innings, as she did not allow a hit with just two frames to go.
The Red Storm offense came up with some insurance runs in the home half of the fifth thanks, in part, to some Providence errors. With two outs already recorded, Bowie doubled into right-center field and came around to score thanks to a single from Rizzi, which was followed up by a Kaitlin Mattera RBI single, bringing the lead to 4-0.
The Red Storm senior pitcher was just six outs from what would have been the first no-hitter thrown by a St. John's pitcher since 2004 before Molly McGarry hit a pinch-hit, solo home run to lead off the sixth. Kmett did not allow a base runner from that point forward, as she retired the next six hitters she faced on her way to the complete game victory.
The performance by Kmett was by far the strongest of her collegiate career, as she struck out a career-high eight batters over her seven innings of work. The complete game was the second of her career, with the first coming last weekend against Seton Hall where she surrendered four runs.
The Red Storm will go for its first BIG EAST series sweep of the season tomorrow at noon. Game three of this series can be streamed via ESPN3.
