St. John’s looks to push BIG EAST record above .500 in three-game set
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will look to build off of last weekend's doubleheader sweep over Providence when it travels to Indianapolis for a three-game set with Butler.

Game one between the Red Storm (7-8, 4-4 BIG EAST) and Bulldogs (10-14, 2-7 BIG EAST) will take place on Friday at 3 p.m. with games two and three to be played as a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. Game one will be broadcast via Youtube and all three contests can be followed with Live Stats.

The Johnnies come off a doubleheader sweep of Providence last Saturday that was led by the pitching staff, as they took game one, 4-0, followed by a 4-1 victory in game two. Sunday's rubber match was scratched due to rain in Queens.

Erin Brown and Kayla Kmett stepped up in a big way for the Red Storm a week ago, as each threw a complete game with Brown's coming as a shutout. The Red Storm sophomore tossed a two-hit gem in game one, allowing just five Friars runners to reach base while Kmett did not surrender a hit in game two until the sixth inning. The two complete games were the strongest outings for Red Storm pitchers thus far this season.

Brown's performance earned her a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as did first baseman Marissa Rizzi's, who hit .500 (3-6) in the doubleheader while scoring three of the Red Storm's eight runs. The Red Storm graduate student has enjoyed a brilliant start to 2021, where her .487 batting average ranks second in the conference to go along with leading the way in on base percentage, slugging percentage and runs scored.

Fellow fifth-year standout Gretchen Bowie has been red hot of late, as she is hitting .389 over the team's last ten games and is leads the club in extra-base hits this season. The Red Storm third baseman sits atop the conference in doubles in 2021 with six, while also adding two triples.

On the other side, Butler snapped a seven-game losing streak this past Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Indiana State. The Bulldogs feature one of the strongest pitching staffs in the BIG EAST, as Karli Ricketts, Alyssa Graves and Mackenzie Griman each have ERAs under three on the season. Ricketts gets it done at the plate as well for Butler, as she ranks second in the conference with six home runs. Lauren Fey is hitting .449 on the season, good enough for third in the BIG EAST.

The Red Storm is 14-5 all-time against Butler and has won eight of the team's last nine meetings dating back to 2017. Butler Softball Field has also been kind to the Johnnies, as they have won seven of the eight meetings between the two squads in Indianapolis.

Following the three-game set, the Red Storm will look towards another crucial road BIG EAST series as they will head to Omaha next weekend to battle Creighton.
