Red Storm suffers its first loss in Queens this season
The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its first home contest of the season, falling to the University of Connecticut, 1-0, at Belson Stadium on Sunday.
UConn's senior Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky recorded the afternoon's lone goal off an assist from classmate Melina Couzis in the 73rd minute.
Graduate student Jordan Kamp logged two saves between the pipes for the Red Storm (5-4-1, 2-4-1 BIG EAST).
Shots were 9-7 in favor of the Huskies (7-2-1, 5-2-1 BIG EAST). The Johnnies, however, recorded four looks on target to UConn's three.
The Huskies controlled possession in the early going of the contest, holding the Johnnies without a shot for the first 15 minutes of action. St. John's began to swing the momentum in its favor over the remainder of the half, boasting a 4-3 edge in shots at the intermission.
Ava Collins recorded the Red Storm's first chance of the game on target in the 16th minute from just inside the box, but UConn's keeper Randi Palacios came up with the save. Less than four minutes later, Michelle Money notched the Johnnies' second chance, rocketing a shot to the right corner of the cage, but Palacios made a diving stop. The Red Storm saw its final look on goal of the opening half come in the 30th minute off the foot of Zsani Kajan. Her attempt was turned aside by Palacios to keep the Red Storm off the board.
UConn fired off four early shots to open the second stanza before snapping the scoreless drought in the 73rd minute. The sequence began off a free kick from Couzis from 35 yards out. The senior out of Baldwin Place, N.Y., found teammate Danyko-Kulchycky, who headed it home to give the visiting team a one-goal advantage.
The Johnnies registered one final look on goal in the 88th minute, as Jessica Garziano, the Red Storm's leading scorer, saw her attempt at the equalizer denied.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, when the Johnnies play host to No. 12 Georgetown. The Red Storm and the Hoyas will kick off at 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
