St. John’s Draws with Providence, 1-1

Jessica Garzinao scores the Red Storm’s lone goal
The St. John's women's soccer team and Providence battled to a 1-1 draw on Thursday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Garziano found the back of the net once again for St. John's, (5-4-2, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) tallying her seventh goal on the season and the second during BIG EAST action. Redshirt junior Annie Wysong picked up an assist on Garziano's tally.
Graduate student Jordan Kamp and redshirt sophomore Naya Lipkens split time in net for the Red Storm. Kamp made two saves on the afternoon, while Lipkens turned aside five Providence (7-2-2, 5-2-2 BIG EAST) shots on target.
The Friars controlled possession in the early going of the contest, outshooting the Johnnies, 6-0, through the first 33 minutes of action.
The Red Storm needed just one shot attempt to get on the board, as Garziano struck in the 34th minute on the team's first chance of the game. The sequence began as Wysong sent a long pass up to Garziano just outside the 18-yard box. The sophomore from Melville, N.Y., rocketed a shot toward the right side of the cage. The ball ricocheted off the goal post and into the net, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 advantage.
With nearly 12 minutes gone in the second stanza, Amber Birchwell netted the equalizer for the Providence to knot the score at, 1-1.
Still tied after 100 minutes of action, the contest went into double overtime. In the two overtime periods, the Johnnies and the Friars earned one shot apiece before the match ended in a draw.
Providence outshot the Johnnies 18-9 on the game and earned eight corners to the Red Storm's two.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday, when the Johnnies complete the home-and-home with Providence at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm and the Friars will kick off at 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
