The Johnnies and Friars will kick off a 3 p.m. on BEDN
After seeing its Saturday match against Georgetown canceled due to a COVID-19 protocols, the St. John's women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Thursday, traveling to Providence for a 3 p.m. contest with the Friars.
The meeting between St. John's (5-4-1, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) and Providence (7-2-1, 5-2-1 BIG EAST) will be available to live stream via the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
St. John's matchup with Providence will be the first game of a home-and-home series, as the two teams will meet again on Sunday at Belson Stadium to conclude the regular-season schedule.
Coming off a pair of setbacks to Seton Hall and Connecticut, the Johnnies will look to get back in the win column on Thursday afternoon. Before falling to the Huskies, 1-0, on March 28, the Red Storm dropped its double overtime contest with Seton Hall, 3-2, on March 25.
Despite the Red Storm's loss to the Pirates, St. John's leading scorers Jessica Garziano and Zsani Kajan both found the back of the net. Garziano etched her name on the score sheet for the first time since the Red Storm's victory against UMass on Feb. 28. It also marked the sixth time this season that the Melville, N.Y., native has tallied a goal. Kajan's 59th minute marker against the Pirates marked her fourth of the season and the 28th of her Red Storm career. The Budapest, Hungary, native is just one score shy of tying Lisa Anschlower for fourth on the program's all-time list.
Thursday will mark the 36th all-time meeting between St. John's and Providence, and the two teams first matchup of the season. The Johnnies will look to pick up their first win over the Friars since the 2016 season. That year the Red Storm defeated Providence ,1-0, at Belson Stadium and advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
The Friars enter Thursday's match bosting a 7-2-1 overall record, including a 5-2-1 mark in BIG EAST play. With the cancellation of the UConn and Georgetown game, Providence must defeat St. John's in its last two meetings to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Friars are coming off of a 2-1 victory over Villanova on Monday. In the win over the Wildcats, Amber Birchwell scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to push Providence past Villanova. Meg Hughes scored the first Friars' goal in the 61st minute. Hughes leads Providence offensively this season with four goals and six assists. She is tied for third overall in the conference with 14 points on the season.
Following Thursday's contest with the Friars, the Red Storm and Providence will meet again on Sunday at Belson Stadium to wrap up regular season action. The two programs will kick off at 2 p.m. on BEDN.
