The Red Storm will battle the Seahawks on Friday, Stags on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will look to build off of its season-opening win over Sacred Heart when it hosts Wagner and Fairfield at the USTA National Tennis Center this weekend.
The Red Storm's matchup with Wagner will take place on Friday at noon with the contest against Fairfield slated for Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
The Johnnies opened their season on a high note, as they shut out Sacred Heart at home on Tuesday, 7-0. It was the Red Storm's first match since March 7 when it blanked Bryant up in Rhode Island, 4-0.
In Tuesday's match with Sacred Heart, St. John's swept doubles play, as the pairings of Emilie Haakansson and Kajsa Stegrell, Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal, as well as Camila Ordonez and Gabriela Tenorio each took their respective matches.
After picking up the point in doubles play, Dawson picked up a decisive victory, 6-1 and 6-1, on the No. 1 court as Haakansson, the transfer from Northern Arizona University, grabbed her first win as a member of the Red Storm on the No. 2 court.
The most highly contested match of the afternoon was played on the No. 3 court, where Garibal won, 10-8, in a split-set tiebreaker. Tenorio, Stegrell and Willa Bay Breunich won their matches on the No. 4, 5 and 6 courts, respectively.
Friday's match with Wagner will mark the third consecutive year that the two teams have faced off, with the Red Storm winning both matches, 4-3, on Feb. 1, 2019 and 4-0 on Feb. 9, 2020. Garibal, Dawson and Jessica Livianu each picked up singles victories in last year's match. The Seahawks have not played yet this season and went 4-5 a year ago before the year was canceled in March.
As for Sunday's match, the Stags are a familiar opponent for the Red Storm, as the two teams have played each other every season dating back to 2013. The Johnnies have emerged victorious in each of those matches, with their most recent win a 6-1 decision last January. The Stags will take on Lehigh to open the season on Saturday before traveling to Queens for the Sunday evening matchup.
Following the weekend's two matches, Coach Lauren Leo's team will next be in action on Friday March 12 when it takes on Army.
