Red Storm improves to 2-0 in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team blanked Wagner, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at USTA National Tennis Center to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Friday's match marked the second consecutive sweep of the season by the Red Storm, as they also blanked Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon.
The doubles pairings remained the same as in the season opener, as Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson won their match on the No. 1 doubles court, 6-0. Over on the No. 2 court, it was the duo of Kajsa Stegrell and Emilie Haakansson taking their match, 6-1, before Gabriela Tenorio and Camila Ordonez teamed-up to blank their opponents, 6-0, and help the Johnnies pick up their first point of the afternoon.
Dawson slotted in on the No. 1 court again for the Red Storm and defeated her opponent, Sam Lugtu, 6-4 and 6-0. The win for the St. John's junior marks her second of the season on the No. 1 court after going 6-1 in the No. 2 slot a year ago. Over on the No. 2 court, it was Haakansson, the transfer from Northern Arizona University, picking up her second win of 2021 as she defeated Fidan Khalilzade, 6-3 and 6-0.
Garibal's match in the No. 3 slot against Tara Dakic was the only contest of the day to go a full three sets, as she prevailed, 11-9. The graduate student from France has played the two longest matches of the season for the Red Storm, as her last contest against Sacred Heart went to a split-set tiebreaker.
Over on the No. 4 court, Tenorio took down Gabi Perraudin, 6-4 and 6-3, to pick up her second singles victory of the season. Stegrell was dominant once again on the No. 5 court, sweeping both of her sets, 6-0. The senior from Stockholm has outscored her opponents 24-2 over the first two matches of the season after not competing in singles play a year ago due to injury.
Finally, Ordonez played in her first singles match of 2021, getting the nod from Coach Lauren Leo on the No. 6 court, and the sophomore delivered, as she won both of her sets decisively, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Sunday when they host Fairfield at USTA National Tennis Center. That match will get underway at 6:30 p.m.
