The Johnnies will tee off at 9 a.m. on Monday
Following a 363-day layoff from competition, the St. John's men's golf team will return to the links on Monday, traveling to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Ross Collegiate Classic.
The Johnnies played in two events last spring before their season came to a halt due to COVID-19. St. John's finished strong in its final event of the 2020 slate, tying for third overall at the Lonnie Barton Invitational. Sophomore Alex Kyriacou led the way for the Red Storm at the tournament, carding a 76-71 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth.
"We've been waiting for this opportunity for 12 months," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "The guys have been practicing hard and are excited to tee it up over the next few days. The entire roster of seven is playing, so it will help them all gain valuable tournament experience going forward through the season. "
Junior Jack Simon will enter the Ross Collegiate Classic as the Johnnies' number one golfer, followed by classmate Tyler Gerbavsits. Sophomores Ryan Rittberger and Kyriacou are slotted in the third and fourth positions. Junior Joseph Busiello will round out the five-man lineup for St. John's while sophomore Gage Wolfle and freshman Doug Beney will play as individuals.
The 13-team field will include host school George Mason along with St. John's, Richmond, Elon, Florida A&M, Ohio University, Loyola MD, George Washington, William & Mary, St. Bonaventure, UNC Greensboro, Seton Hall and Villanova.
The Red Storm will tee off on the par-72 6,633-yard Donald Ross course at 9 a.m., playing 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.
Results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each day.
