Jack Simon and Doug Beney sit atop the leaderboard after 18 holes
The St. John's men's golf team sits atop the leaderboard following round one of the Wildcat Spring Invitational on Monday.
The Johnnies fired a season-low 3-under 277 over the first 18 holes to lead the 16-team field and sit five strokes ahead of second-place Bucknell. As a team, St. John's drained a tournament-best 17 birdies on the day.
Junior Jack Simon, the reigning BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week, and freshman Doug Beney each put forth spectacular opening rounds, and are tied for first out of 94 golfers. Simon and Beney both signed off on a season-low 4-under 66 on the day, for the best single-round effort by a Red Storm golfer since former St. John's standout Gerald Mackedon carded a 64 during the 2018-19 season. The Red Storm duo was bogey-free on the front nine and each made five birdies over the first 18 holes.
Junior Tyler Gerbavsits also turned in a top-10 performance, finishing at 1-over 71 to close out play in a tie for ninth. Gerbavsits' first-round effort was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the par-4 fourth and 13th holes.
Sophomore Alex Kyriacou wrapped up round one three-strokes back of Gerbavsits with a score of 74 to finish inside the top half of the standings.
Sophomores Gage Wolfle and Ryan Rittberger rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, carding a 78 and 80, respectively.
The Red Storm will resume play at the Radnor Valley Country Club tomorrow. Live results will be available throughout the day via Golfstat and will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of the round.
