St. John’s Secures Third-Straight Team Title

Jack Simon places second overall with an even-par 140
The St. John's men's golf team claimed its third-straight team title on Tuesday at the Wildcat Spring Invitational.
As a team, St. John's turned in a combined score of 277-296=573 to lead the 16-team field and finish one-stroke ahead of second-place Temple. At the two-day 36-hole event, the Johnnies recorded a combined 27 birdies.
"I am so proud of all the guys for hanging in there at the two-day event and getting another victory," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "It was an all-around team effort."
Individually, junior Jack Simon recorded his third top-five finish of the season, placing second overall out of 94 golfers. Simon fired off a tournament-high eight birdies over two rounds.
"Jack had a bad break on 18th hole with a mud ball, but he came through with a clutch up and down and really finished strong," Galletta said.
Simon opened up play on Monday with a season-best 66 before carding a closing-round 74 to finish at even-par 140, and one-shot clear of classmate Tyler Gerbavsits.
"It's all about the team win," Simon said. "Even though we had a rough day out there, we all stuck in and grinded it out to get the W. I hit it in the water on the last hole and knew I was out of the tournament individually, but I am so happy I was able to get up and down to secure the win for the team."
After turning in an even-par 70 on the day, Gerbavsits jumped five spots in the standings to finish fourth overall with a combined score of 141 (+1). The Huntington, N.Y., native drained a team-best four birdies on the afternoon.
Following a season-low 66 (-4) on Monday, freshman Doug Beney closed out play inside the top-15, signing for a 79 to finish with a combined score of 145.
Sophomore Alex Kyriacou finished six-strokes back of Beney, posting a 77 on the afternoon to wrap up action inside the top half of the standings.
Classmates Ryan Rittberger and Gage Wolfle rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, turning in a 155 and 157, respectively.
St. John's will continue its spring slate on April 17-18 at Bethpage Golf Course in Farmingdale, as the Johnnies host their annual home event, The Doc Gimmler.
