Red Storm to battle the Seawolves in final nonconference match of 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will play its final nonconference match of the season when it travels to Stony Brook to battle the Seawolves on Wednesday morning.
The matchup between the two programs is set for 10 a.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, but was moved up due to the weather forecast.
The Red Storm (4-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) is coming off its first loss of the season at Villanova by a score of 5-2 last Thursday. The match marked the first for the Johnnies in nearly three weeks, as the team had two of its prior matches canceled due to Covid-19 concerns.
In the match against the Wildcats, Camila Ordonez and Willa Bay Breunich each grabbed victories on the No. 5 and 6 courts. For Ordonez, the win marked her third of the season, as she won in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-6. Breunich's win on the No. 6 court was also her third of the season and came in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
The Red Storm had dominated its first four matches of the season prior to the meeting with Villanova, dropping just two of 28 possible team points on the season. Emilie Haakansson, Najah Dawson and Kajsa Stegrell each picked up singles victories in all four of those matches for the Johnnies.
The Seawolves (4-2, 0-0 MVC) come into the match with the Red Storm having not played since their 5-2 victory over Connecticut on March 27. Stony Brook has played some opponents common to the Johnnies this season, as they also defeated Seton Hall, 6-1, and Sacred Heart, 4-3, back in March. The Seawolves are a member of the Missouri Valley Conference where they ranked second in preseason polling.
The two programs last met in the 2018 season with the result being a Red Storm victory, 4-0. The Johnnies have won each of the last three meetings with the Seawolves dating back to the 2016 season after Stony Brook had taken the prior six matches in a row.
Following Wednesday morning's matchup, the Red Storm will travel to Rhode Island on Sunday to battle Providence in its final regular season match of 2021 as the BIG EAST Tennis Championships will kick off a week from this Thursday.
