STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team picked up its fifth win of 2021, edging Stony Brook, 4-3, on the road on Wednesday morning.
The victory marked the first since March 19 for the Red Storm (5-1) who has played just one other match since that date. The Johnnies are now 4-0 this season in their nonconference contests, as they picked up the doubles point in the match and won three of the six singles bouts to seal the victory over the Seawolves (4-3).
Head Coach Lauren Leo switched up the doubles pairings a bit for the Red Storm, as Najah Dawson and Kajsa Stegrell picked up a victory on the No. 1 court, 6-3, while Emilie Haakansson and Camila Ordonez won their match in the No. 2 slot, 6-4. Willa Bay Breunich and Gabriela Tenorio's match on the No. 3 court was not finished.
With the Johnnies picking up the point in doubles it was onto singles, where Dawson was forced to retire in the second set on the No. 1 court, giving the Seawolves the point. Haakansson was strong in the No. 2 slot yet again for the Red Storm, taking her match in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4, to grab her fifth victory of the season.
Tenorio took the No. 3 court this afternoon for the Red Storm and fell in three sets, winning the second, 6-2, but falling in the first and third, 6-4 and 13-11, respectively.
On the No. 4 court, Stegrell picked up her fifth win of the season in singles in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. The Red Storm senior is undefeated thus far in 2021, with this being her first victory in the No. 4 slot this season.
Ordonez played the longest match of the afternoon on the No. 5 court, winning the first set, 7-6, but falling in the final two, 6-3 and 10-5. Finally on the No. 6 court, it was Breunich taking her match handily, 6-3 and 6-2, to notch her fourth victory of the season and remain unbeaten in 2021.
The Johnnies have one match remaining in the 2021 regular season, as they will travel to Providence to battle the Friars in a BIG EAST contest on Sunday. The conference bout will get underway at 1 p.m. The Red Storm will travel down to Cayce, S.C. next weekend for the BIG EAST Tennis Championships.
