St. John’s Enters BIG EAST Championships as No. 2 Seed

Red Storm looks to defend its 2019 title beginning on Friday against Xavier
CAYCE, S.C. – The St. John's men's tennis team enters the 2021 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championships presented by Jeep as the No. 2 seed as it looks to defend its 2019 title beginning on Friday against Xavier.
The No. 2 Red Storm (14-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) and No. 7 Musketeers (2-11, 0-3 BIG EAST) will square off at 1 p.m. on Friday in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals. Live stats will be available for each tournament match courtesy of the BIG EAST. The Johnnies have battled Xavier in each of the last three conference tournaments, winning all three matches.
The conference office announced that the Johnnies were selected as the No. 2 seed on Monday afternoon following the team's dominant regular season where it dropped just one match of its 15 played.
Djuro Opacic has been the team's primary weapon in the No. 1 slot this season where he went 11-1 in 2021 and 12-1 overall. The senior from Serbia won ten of those contests in straight sets and heads into the tournament on a two-match winning streak.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish turned to senior Ignacio Garcia on the No. 2 court in most of the team's matches this season, where he finished the year with a 9-0 record and a perfect 11-0 mark overall. Garcia earned BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week honors once this year back on April 1.
Sophomore Giuseppe De Camelis finished the 2021 campaign tied with Opacic for the team lead in wins, as he posted a 12-1 overall record. De Camelis enters the conference tournament on a four-match win streak, which is the second longest such streak on the team as he was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for his performance in the final three contests of the regular season.
Senior Louis-nils Michel posted an 8-1 overall record for the Red Storm this season, including a 6-1 mark on the No. 3 court where he spent most of the year.
Evan Felcher and Charlie James will help round out the Red Storm lineup in Cayce this weekend. Felcher finished the season with an 11-1 overall record, including a 7-1 mark on the No. 5 court, while James finished 7-2, going 6-1 on the No. 4 court in the regular season.
As for Xavier, they will be looking for their first win since March 6 when they battle the Red Storm on Friday as they enter the postseason on an eight-match skid. The Musketeers wins this season came over Bellarmine and Eastern Illinois and they fell in their three conference matchups with Butler, Marquette and DePaul.
The winner of Friday afternoon's match will go on to face the winner of the contest between No. 3 Marquette and No. 6 Villanova which will get underway at 5 p.m. on Friday. The semifinal match is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
