4/24/2021 7:10:00 PM | Softball
Wildcats score 32 runs over 12 innings in pair of victories
The Red Storm (9-16, 6-11 BIG EAST) ran into a Wildcats (25-10, 9-1 BIG EAST) offense that was red hot, as they recorded 32 runs on 30 hits over 12 innings of softball, taking St. John's pitching deep three times over the two games.
A few seniors shined for the Red Storm in their final home BIG EAST doubleheader, as Kaitlin Mattera went 4-8 on the day, smacking a home run in the second game and adding three RBIs as well as two runs scored. Additionally, Marissa Rizzi had three hits while Gretchen Bowie put together two. Elyse Morris hit her first home run of the season in game one of the twin bill ahead of postgame festivities honoring the Red Storm's eight seniors.
Game One
The Wildcats offense came out swinging in the first game, as they tallied five runs over the first two innings off Red Storm starter Angela Saric (1-3), scoring three in the first inning and two in the second to grab a 5-0 lead. The only frame that Villanova wouldn't score in in the opening game of the twin bill was the fourth.
The Johnnies' offense responded in the second, however, as Kalei Sorensen and Gabriella Conca each reached base to open the inning and Conca came home to score on a passed ball. The next batter was Morris, who clobbered her first home run of the season and second of her career to right center, narrowing the gap to a 5-3 Villanova lead.
The Wildcats would tack on two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to stretch their lead to 9-3. Villanova starter Paige Rauch (14-2) was strong throughout, but the Red Storm was able to get to her some more in the bottom of the fifth. Four consecutive singles off the bats of Bowie, Mattera, Rizzi and Peyton Cody plated a run, narrowing the deficit to 9-4.
Villanova would tack on seven more runs over the final two innings of the game, including five in the top of the seventh, to take game one, 16-4.
Game Two
Erin Brown (4-7) got the ball in game two for the Johnnies, who were able to get on the board first. After a scoreless top of the first, a Mattera double followed by a hit by pitch from Rizzi created a first and third situation with two outs. Head Coach Bob Guerriero sent Rizzi to steal second, allowing Mattera to come home and score to give the Red Storm a lead, 1-0.
The Wildcats broke through in the second, as two of the nine errors that the Johnnies made on the day allowed the road team to tie the score, 1-1. The Red Storm offense had its best inning of the afternoon in response as the first four batters of the frame reached on three singles, followed by the big blast, a three-run shot off the bat of Mattera, to give the Johnnies a 5-1 lead.
Villanova quickly answered in the third, however, as they would send 12 batters to the plate and score five runs on five hits, leaving three on base, to regain the lead, 6-5. The Wildcats would tack on three more off Brown in the fourth to lead, 9-5, after three and a half innings.
The Johnnies got one back in the home half of the fourth, as a double from Rizzi followed by an RBI single from Sorensen closed the gap a bit, making the score 9-6.
The Wildcats put together another major inning in the fifth, plating seven runs on three hits, as Red Storm pitching walked four and the defense committed an error, bringing the score to 16-6, which would hold up as the final in five innings.
The Red Storm and Wildcats will face off one final time tomorrow in Queens with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 and live stats will be available.
