St. John’s Women’s Tennis Falls to Villanova, 5-2

Red Storm suffers its first defeat of 2021
Villanova, Pa. – Taking the court for the first time in nearly three weeks, the St. John's women's tennis team fell to Villanova on the road in a BIG EAST battle on Thursday afternoon, 5-2.
The Red Storm (4-1) had not played a match since March 19 against Seton Hall before Thursday afternoon, as it suffered its first loss in well over a year. Through the team's first four matches, the Johnnies had lost just two of 28 team points in the 2021 season.
The Red Storm dropped the doubles point, Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson fell on the No. 1 court along with Camila Ordonez and Gabriela Tenorio on the No. 3 court. Jessica Livianu and Emilie Haakansson took their match on the No.2. court, 6-1, as the two were paired up for the first time this season.
The Wildcats were strong on the No. 1-4 courts on the afternoon, as they picked up a victory in each match. On the No. 1 court, Annalise Klopfer edged Livianu, 6-2 and 6-3, to grab a point for her team. Claudia Althans was strong on the No. 2 court as well, handing Dawson her first loss of the season in three sets, 6-2, 2-6 and 11-9.
On the No. 3 court, Lexi DeNucci handed Haakansson her first loss as a member of the Red Storm, 6-3 and 6-2, while Garibal fell in a loss due to retirement on the No. 4 court.
The Johnnies had their way with Villanova on the Nos. 5 and 6 courts, as they showed a bit of their depth in the BIG EAST matchup. Ordonez picked up the win in the No. 5 slot, 6-1 and 7-6, to grab her third victory of the season. On the No. 6 court, Willa Bay Breunich snatched her third victory of 2021 as well, 6-1 and 6-3.
The Red Storm will have some time before its next match, as it will next take the court on April 16. The Johnnies will close out the regular season against Providence before shifting their focus to the BIG EAST Tennis Championship beginning on April 22.
