Wildcats score all seven of their runs in the final three innings
Leading 1-0 after six innings, the St. John's baseball team saw Villanova score seven runs over the final three frames of a 7-2 victory on Friday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Starter Ian Murphy tossed four scoreless, one-hit innings before handing the ball off to Ben Adams, who was charged with one hit and one run in 2.1 frames of work. Adams' lone run crossed the plate after the freshman southpaw from Ottawa had exited the game in the seventh.
David Glancy doubled and drove in the Red Storm's first run with a sac fly in the fourth. Ryan Hogan and Tim McHugh also registered two-baggers for the Johnnies (19-21, 9-16 BIG EAST).
Mitchell Henshaw also brought home a run, lacing an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Carson Bartels singled and scored in the second contest of a three-game series. Justin Folz and Marty Higgins also recorded base hits on Friday afternoon.
After sending just nine batters to the plate in innings one through three, the Johnnies broke through in the home half of the fourth. Bartels logged the Red Storm's first hit of the game with a leadoff single to center before moving to third on a Hogan ground-rule double in the following at-bat. Next up was Glancy, who lifted a sac fly to left and broke the scoreless tie.
Between the third and sixth innings, Murphy and Adams combined to leave six Villanova runners on base, including four in scoring position. The Johnnies proved unable to continue the trend in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on first, the Wildcats (21-13, 9-11 BIG EAST) strung together three straight hits. The first, a Chris Rotondo single, moved John Whooley into scoring position before Nick Lorusso doubled to center and tied the game at one. In the following at-bat, Ryan Toohers laced a two-run single to left to give the Wildcats at 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats looked as if they might add to their lead in the eighth after loading the bases with one out, but Geoff Mosseau entered the game and worked back-to-back outs, forcing a pop foul and a swinging K to get out of the inherited jam unscathed.
After the Johnnies went down in order in the eighth, Villanova tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
St. John's and Villanova will wrap their series, and the 2021 season, tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on ESPN3.
