Red Storm Men’s Tennis Earns Multiple High Marks in 2021 Oracle ITA Northeast Rankings

Johnnies finish second as a team, place three players in top 20
QUEENS, N.Y. – After a season that saw it go 16-2 and advance all the way to the BIG EAST Tennis Championship match, the St. John's men's tennis team placed highly in the Oracle ITA 2021 Northeast Division I Rankings.
The squad was ranked second overall in the region by the ITA, finishing right behind Monmouth, who the Johnnies battled to a close 4-3 loss during the regular season.
The Red Storm also received several individual high marks in the rankings. Seniors Djuro Opacic and Ignacio Garcia checked in at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively in singles play, while Louis-nils Michel came in at No. 17 on the list. On the doubles side, it was Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis who were ranked No. 7.
The Johnnies were one of two teams in the region to have three players recognized among the 20 in singles play along with UPenn.
The team opened the season on a ten-match winning streak in 2021, as its only regular season loss came to Monmouth. The Johnnies would close the regular season with a few more wins before defeating Xavier and Marquette to advance to the BIG EAST Championship. The Red Storm would battle DePaul to the end in the final but fall, 4-3, to end its season.
Opacic earned the No. 1 ranking in the region after a season that saw him go 12-3 overall, including an 11-3 mark overall for the Red Storm on the No. 1 court. The Red Storm senior opened the 2021 campaign on a tear, winning each of his first ten matches.
Garcia's No. 3 ranking comes after an incredible 2021 season that saw him go undefeated at 13-0 and earn a spot on the All-BIG EAST team. The senior from San Juan, Puerto Rico was named BIG EAST Player of the Week once as well, and was dominant at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships, winning two of his three matches while the other went unfinished.
Michel was a key cog for the Red Storm in its impressive 2021 campaign, compiling a 11-1 overall record in singles play, including a 6-1 mark on the No. 3 court. Michel won his first seven matches of the season while also taking each of his three contests at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships.
The Red Storm had one of its doubles' pairings recognized in the rankings as well, as it was Garcia and De Camelis coming in at No. 7. The Johnnies' duo teamed up to post a 4-2 overall record on the No. 1 doubles court in 2021.
