Johnnies finish eighth as a team, see three players recognized in individual rankings
QUEENS, N.Y. – After a season that saw it go 7-2 and advance to the BIG EAST Tennis semifinals, the St. John's women's tennis team placed highly in the Oracle ITA 2021 Northeast Division I Rankings.
The squad was ranked eighth overall in the region by the ITA, the highest ranking for a BIG EAST team and the third-best in the state of New York behind Syracuse and Army, who finished first and fifth, respectively.
Individually, the Johnnies found their way onto both the singles and doubles rankings. Red Storm graduate student Jessica Livianu came in at No. 7 in the singles rankings, while it was Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal who teamed up to finish eighth in doubles.
In a season that had several of its matches postponed or canceled due to Covid-19, the Johnnies managed to put together a strong 2021 campaign, finishing the regular season 6-1 after opening the year on a four-match winning streak. The Red Storm would go on to blank Connecticut at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships in the quarterfinals, 4-0, before falling to top-ranked Xavier, 4-1, in the semifinals.
Livianu was recognized in the singles rankings, coming in at No. 7 after a season that saw her go 3-1 in limited action. The most decorated player in program history was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team for the fourth time in her career in 2021, as she won each of her matches at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships. Livianu is the only player in program history to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year three times, a mark which will not soon be broken.
The Red Storm duo of Dawson and Garibal came in at No. 8 in the region following a season that saw them team up to go 4-1 overall on the No. 1 court. The Johnnies' tandem was a key reason for the team's success in doubles play, as the Red Storm grabbed the doubles point in nearly all of its matches in 2021.
