Red Storm senior posts 2-0 singles record at “The World Cup of Tennis”
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's tennis senior Ignacio Garcia recently took the international stage for Puerto Rico at the Davis Cup for the fifth time in his career from June 30-July3.
Overall, Garcia posted doubles record of 1-1 and a singles mark of 2-0 over three matches for Puerto Rico, who finished with an overall record of 2-1 at the tournament in Group III. Puerto Rico's 2-1 record was just a win shy of Jamaica's, who finished atop Pool C at 3-0.
Puerto Rico began play in Group II after falling to Denmark in the World Group II Playoff Bracket back in March of 2020 by falling, 5-0. Garcia competed in two singles matches and a doubles match in that contest but was unable to secure a point for his team despite playing tightly contested matches each time.
The Davis Cup kicked off on June 30 with Garcia taking the court against Jorge Daniel Chevez of Panama, and the St. John's standout picked up a three-set victory, taking the first set, 6-3, before picking up a decisive 2-1 win in the third frame. The point that Garcia earned helped lead his country to a 2-1 win over Panama to open the tournament.
The next day, Puerto Rico squared off with the US Virgin Islands and again, it was Garcia helping his team secure crucial points. The San Juan native earned a victory in singles play over Tomas Del Olmo, 6-4 and 6-2, to earn his second singles win in as many days. In doubles play, Garcia grabbed a straight-set victory alongside Sebastian Arcila, 6-2 and 6-2.
The final match of this year's Davis Cup for Garcia came against Jamaica alongside Sebastian Arcila, but the duo fell in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2 in what was the only loss in three games for both Garcia and his team.
Overall, Garcia has posted a 16-6 record at the Davis Cup in five appearances, going 11-5 in singles play to go along with a 5-1 mark in doubles matches. The San Juan native has now represented Puerto Rico in each of the last five Davis Cups.
The Red Storm senior used the Davis Cup as a way to build off of his strong 2021 campaign in Queens which saw him go a perfect 13-0 in singles matches en route to a spot on the BIG EAST First Team and a number three singles ranking in the northeast according to the ITA.
