The Red Storm earned the honor for the eighth straight year
QUEENS, N.Y. (July 19, 2021) – For the 16th time in program history, the St. John's volleyball team has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, earning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-2021 season.
The honor is awarded to programs that maintain at least a 3.30 team GPA or higher during the school year. This will be the eight straight year the Johnnies have claimed this award.
As a group, the Red Storm turned in a 3.70 GPA for the spring semester and a 3.66 GPA for the 2020-2021 academic year.
"Our program's commitment to achieving high academic honors is evident," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "This year's team carried the baton to earn the program's 16th AVCA Team Academic Award. I am proud that our program was recognized by Kathy Deboer and our American Volleyball Coaches Association. Any season that you can win both an Eastern Division BIG EAST title and the AVCA Team Academic Award is a special year. I want to thank Eric Reinecker and Alexandria Sachs for mentoring our players to successfully navigate athletics at the collegiate level."
The 2020-2021 Red Storm volleyball squad featured 15 players from eight different countries including Italy and Greece.
Since the program was founded in 1994, St. John's has been awarded this accolade more than any other school in the BIG EAST. In addition, under the guidance of Persico, the Red Storm volleyball program has earned a 3.0 GPA or better in all 27 of its seasons.
St. John's was previously honored by the AVCA in 2019-20 (3.59), 2018-19 (3.48) 2017-18 (3.37), 2016-17 (3.47 GPA), 2015-16 (3.51 GPA), 2014-15 (3.32 GPA), 2013-14 (3.40 GPA), 2010-11 (3.31 GPA), 2008-09 (3.30 GPA), 2006-07 (3.45 GPA), 2000-01 (3.30 GPA), 1999-00 (3.30 GPA), 1997-98 (3.44 GPA), 1996-97 (3.54 GPA) and 1995-96 (3.48 GPA).
