Reliever earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors in 2021
After establishing a reputation as one of the most reliable and unhittable closers in the BIG EAST, Ethan Routzahn will enter the professional ranks after signing a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres.
Following stops at Dallas Baptist and Northwest Florida State College, Routzahn joined the Red Storm in 2019, making 16 relief appearances and finishing the season with a 5.25 ERA. Following a shaky start, Routzahn allowed just three earned runs over his last 14 appearances, a span of 12.0 innings. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native carried that momentum into 2020, taking over the role of the Red Storm's primary closer and making a team-high six appearances. He recorded one save and a 1.69 ERA.
In 2021, Routzahn earned a place on the All-BIG EAST Second Team after making a team-high 16 appearances, going 2-1 with a 1.19 ERA and six saves. He struck out 30 batters and issued just 10 walks in 22.2 innings while holding opponents to a .143 batting average. A versatile talent on the mound, Routzahn recorded five outings of 2.0 innings or more, including wins in consecutive outings against Georgetown and Seton Hall during the month of April.
Routzahn is the second member of the 2021 Red Storm to earn a nod from an MLB organization, as Nick Mondak was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 18th round.
Over the past several decades, St. John's has been the Northeast's premier program in terms sending talent to the next level. From 2010-19, Red Storm student-athletes accumulated 39 draft picks, the highest totals in the Northeast or the BIG EAST. When no Johnnies heard their names called during the five-round 2020 MLB Draft, it marked the first summer since 1976 that no St. John's players were drafted or signed to a free-agent professional contract.
