The St. John's men's golf team kicks off its 2021 fall season on Saturday, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for the Alex Lagowitz Memorial hosted by Colgate.
"I am looking forward to the start of the 2021 fall season," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "We have a lot of veteran talent returning to the team this year, as well as some great new additions. We are thrilled to get back on the course and back to competition."
The Johnnies are coming off a stellar 2021 spring campaign, finishing first in five different events. In the Red Storm's final tournament of the season, The Doc Gimmler, the squad turned in a three-round 13-under par for the third best score in program history.
Galletta welcomes back his top golfer from a season ago in Jack Simon. The All-BIG EAST Second Team selection finished inside the top-10 in five of the Red Storm's eight events, tying for a league-most two first place finishes. In addition to earning all-conference honors, Simon was named to the 2021 PING All-Northeast Region Team.
Simon will enter the Johnnies' first tournament of the fall slate as the team's number one golfer, while classmate Tyler Gerbavsits is slotted as the number two golfer. Junior Ryan Rittberger and freshman Peicheng Chen will be playing in the third and fourth positions. Senior Joseph Busiello and sophomore Doug Beney will round out the six-man lineup.
In addition to St. John's, the 13-team field will include host school Colgate as well as Bucknell, Cornell, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Lafayette, Rhode Island, Rider, St. Bonaventure, Seton Hall, Villanova and Yale.
The tournament format calls for 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 Sunday. The Johnnies will tee off at 9 a.m. both days on the par 72 6,834-yard course.
Following its event at Colgate, the Red Storm will return to action Sept. 11-12, as the Johnnies host their annual home event, The Doc Gimmler, at Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Live stats for the Alex Lagowitz Memorial will be available via Golfstat and results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each day.
