Red Storm and Huskies to meet in Storrs at 8:30 p.m. on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will wrap a New England road swing on Wednesday when it heads to Storrs for a contest with the Connecticut Huskies.
Tip-off from Gampel Pavilion is set for 8:30 p.m. on FS1 with Aaron Goldsmith and Donny Marshall on the call. Westwood One Sports will carry the national radio broadcast with Lance Medow and Tim Welsh. The LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network broadcast with John Minko and Tarik Turner can be heard on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network app, TuneIn, XM radio channel 389 and channel 979 in the SXM app, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app.
After seeing its first four scheduled BIG EAST games postponed due to COVID issues, the Red Storm (9-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) split its opening week of league play, defeating DePaul on Wednesday before falling on the road to then-No. 16 Providence on Saturday.
Beginning Wednesday, five of the Red Storm's next six games will present the Johnnies with a chance at a Quad One win. As it stands today, 10 of the Red Storm's remaining 17 BIG EAST contests will give St. John's the opportunity for a Quad One victory.
In that victory over DePaul to open conference action, Julian Champagnie put forth the most explosive individual performance of his collegiate tenure. The junior wing from Brooklyn logged career-highs of 34 points and 16 rebounds, helping the Red Storm claim a season opener for the first time since 2016-17. Despite netting just 11 points, his lowest scoring total since March of 2020, at Providence on Saturday, Champagnie still managed to find a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fifth time this season. Through games played on Sunday, Champagnie ranks second in the league and 15th in the nation averaging 20.7 points per contest.
Dylan Addae-Wusu is coming off a pair of career-best performances in his first two BIG EAST games of the season. On Wednesday against the Blue Demons, the Bronx native set a then-career-high with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting in addition to dishing out eight assists. Three days later on the road at Providence, the Bronx native eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time as a Johnnie while also tallying seven boards and five helpers. Over his last seven games, the sophomore is averaging 13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game, the latter of which leads the team during that stretch.
Addae-Wusu's high school teammate at Our Saviour Lutheran, Posh Alexander continues to solidify a role as one of the conference's most explosive talents. The Brooklyn product is averaging 15.8 points per game, good enough for sixth in the BIG EAST, while leading the league in steals (2.4) and ranking third in assists (4.9). Last season, Alexander became just the third individual in BIG EAST history to win the conference's freshman of the year and defensive player of the year awards simultaneously. Alexander was a co-winner of the league's defensive player of the year award with UConn's Isaiah Whaley.
St. John's will look to pick up a win outside the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena for the first time this season. The Johnnies are averaging 88.0 points per game in Queens compared to just 69.8 points in contests held outside the Queens campus.
UConn (10-4, 1-2 BIG EAST) has lost two of its first three league games, bookending a win at Marquette with losses to Providence and Seton Hall. The Huskies still received 17 votes in Monday's Associated Press Top 25 poll, one of five BIG EAST teams that is currently ranked or receiving votes.
Picked to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, the Huskies boast the league's second-highest scoring offense (79.9 ppg), trailing only St. John's at 82.4 points per game.
Three Huskies are averaging double figures on the season, led by graduate student R.J. Cole at 16.2 points per game. Sophomore forward Adama Sanogo chips in 14.9 points on 54.2 percent shooting while senior guard Tyrese Martin adds 14.3 points per contest.
St. John's and UConn will meet for the 65th time in the history of the two programs, a series history that favors the Red Storm, 36-28. St. John's has won four of its last five meetings with the Huskies, including a 74-70 victory last season in Storrs. Alexander logged 18 points and six assists in that contest while Champagnie added 12 and Addae-Wusu chipped in 10.
After taking on the Huskies, the Red Storm will welcome Georgetown to Madison Square Garden for a 4:30 p.m. tip. Tickets are on sale now by visiting RedStormTix.com or calling 1-888-GO-STORM.
