PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 14, 2022) – Leilani Correa became the 27th St. John's women's basketball player to record 1,000 career points, but the Red Storm fell to Providence, 56-49, at Alumni Hall on Friday afternoon.
Correa scored 13 points, tallied four rebounds and dished out a pair of assists in the loss. The guard also had a team-best three steals.
Kadaja Bailey led the Johnnies with 19 points, as the junior went 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from three. Making her third start of the season, Rayven Peeples logged a new career-best with 14 rebounds in addition to scoring eight points.
The Johnnies (5-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) got off to a slow start, going 5-for-15 from the floor and 1-for-7 from beyond the arc in the opening frame. Providence (8-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) held the hot hand, shooting 7-for-16 overall and 2-for-4 from deep to open an 18-11 lead after one quarter.
Defensively, St. John's was able to hold the Friars to 21.4 percent shooting from the floor and just six points in the second quarter. Scoring troubles, however, continued for the Red Storm, as the team went 2-for-14 overall during the frame. The Johnnies still managed to claw their way within five, 24-19, at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, the offensive woes continued for the Johnnies, as two 3-pointers from Correa were the only field goals made for the team during the period. The junior scored nine of the team's 12 points in the frame, helping St. Johns to stay within reach of the Providence's 38-31 advantage after 30 minutes of action.
The Red Storm offense came alive with a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Bailey tied the game with a shot from beyond the arc before a Correa jumper put the Red Storm ahead 40-38 with 7:47 remaining. A back-and-forth battle ensued, but Providence ended the game with a 6-0 rally to put the game out of reach for St. John's.
Mary Baskerville of Providence led all players with 20 points during the league game. The senior joined the Red Storm's Correa in recording her 1,000th career point during the contest.
