Johnnies aim for third-straight win during battle at Villanova
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team travels for a BIG EAST battle at Villanova on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off from the Higgins Soccer Complex is slated for 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
The Red Storm hits the road following a two-match homestand that saw the Johnnies top both Connecticut and Seton Hall, 1-0. Gina Muzi made start between the pipes during both games, tallying a combined four saves during the two shutouts. Isabelle Aviza tallied the game-winning goal in both St. John's victories, giving the senior eight goals for her career in the Red and White.
Against the Pirates, Jessica Garziano took the Red Storm corner kick in the 26th minute, sending it towards the head of Nicole Gordon. Gordon then powered the ball towards Aviza before the Medway, Mass., native sunk the ball into the bottom of the net. In the Johnnies takedown of UConn, Melina Couzis found the forward in the box before Aviza blasted the ball past the Husky keeper in the 14th minute.
The Johnnies are 5-3-3 this season and 2-1-0 in league play. All five wins for the Red Storm have come at Belson Stadium with the team posting a 0-2-3 record on the road. Muzi holds five clean sheets under her belt, with three during the Johnnies' last four matches. The netminder has allowed just eight goals this year while recording 29 saves during her senior campaign.
Through 11 matches, nine different Johnnie players have scored this season. Aviza, Garziano, Gordon and Ava Collins lead the way with two goals apiece. Garziano also paces the Red Storm with four assists and eight points.
Villanova enters Sunday's matinee at 2-4-2 this year with a 1-1-0 mark in league play. The Wildcats have not won at home this season, logging a 0-2-2 record at the Higgins Soccer Complex. Villanova opened conference play with a 2-0 win at Seton Hall before falling to Xavier, 1-0.
In the Wildcats' win over the Pirates, Makayla Stadler and Lauren Ashman posted their first goals of the season. Ashman is one of five Villanova players with three points, so far, this year. Defensively, Megan McClay has started five matches in goal for the Wildcats. The Flower Mound, Texas, native made 14 saves during the conference clashes with Xavier and Seton Hall, earning the graduate student BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Samar Azem is in her first season at the helm for the Wildcats. The head coach joined Villanova following a five-year stint at Campbell where her teams went 50-30-8. During the abbreviated 2020-21 season, Azem's squad captured the Big South Championship and made the Camels' second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, she was awarded the Big South Coach of the Year honor.
The series between the Johnnies and Wildcats is tied, 13-13-4. During the last meeting between the programs, the Red Storm topped Villanova, 2-1. Gordon secured the game-winner in the 59th minute of the match.
Following the conference tilt, the Red Storm returns home for a battle against Creighton at Belson Stadium. Kick-off from the league match is slated for 7 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
