Red Storm returns to Belson Stadium for game against Creighton on Thursday
VILLANOVA, Pa. – St. John's women's soccer fell to Villanova, 1-0, at the Higgins Soccer Complex on a rainy Sunday.
Gina Muzi made the start in goal, allowing the one tally while making a pair of saves for the Red Storm (5-4-3, 2-2 BIG EAST). Megan McClay picked up the win for the Wildcats (3-4-2, 2-1-0) as she made two stops for the opposition.
Jessica Garziano paced the Johnnie offense with three shots. Brooke Boyd and Jailene DeJesus added one attempt each during the match. Villanova's Brigid Malloy recorded the game-winning tally for the Wildcats, her first goal of the year.
The Wildcats went on the attack to start the match, sending a shot wide in the second minute of play. Despite the hot start, the attempt was the lone shot for either team during the first 45 minutes of rain-soaked action.
Villanova's offense charged forward after halftime and in the 55th minute, the Wildcats broke through as Malloy sunk a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Down 1-0, Garziano looked to combat the attack as she attempted to add a tally of her own in the 58th minute. However, the Melville, N.Y., native blast was blocked, stifling the Johnnie offense.
Boyd and Garziano pelted a pair of attempts at the Villanova keeper in the 64th and 65th minutes, respectively, with neither Red Storm player able to convert the equalizer. Garziano added another shot on target in the 66th minute, however, McClay made the stop, stalling the St. John's effort. DeJesus made the final attempt for the Johnnies in the 73rd minute but missed to mark.
St. John's returns to Belson Stadium for a BIG EAST battle with Creighton. Kick-off from the conference clash is slated for 6 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
