St. John’s Wins Five-Set Thriller at Georgetown

Red Storm splits the two match road trip
WASHINGTON (Oct. 1, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team took down Georgetown in five sets on Saturday night at McDonough Arena to split its first BIG EAST road swing of the season.
Giorgia Walther notched her first double-double of the season with 20 kills and career-high 18 digs. Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Rachele Rastelli added 17 kills to the attack. Eleonora Tosi chipped 11 kills on a .435 hitting percentage.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk, the NCAA's leader in assists entering the weekend, tallied 47 helpers and six digs.
Freshman Erin Jones set season-highs in three separate categories with 10 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Bree Martin recorded a career-high 25 digs.
As a team, St. John's (12-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) hit .266 while the Hoyas (3-11, 1-2) hit .164.
Forcing extra points in the back-and-forth first frame, the Hoyas came out on top, 28-26. In a set featuring 14 ties and three lead changes, the Red Storm was unable to capitalize on a 23-20 late lead. Walther led the way with five kills in the stanza.
Trailing 3-1 early in the second stanza, the Johnnies used a 5-0 run to take the lead for the entirety of the frame. The Red Storm dominated the set, hitting .531 with 19 kills. Rastelli notched six of those kills and 500. Stambrowska hit a set-high .667 with four kills.
After the Red Storm won the third set's opening point, the Hoyas used a 9-0 run to take a commanding lead. The Hoyas controlled the rest of the frame, never allowing the Red Storm to regain an advantage. Walther tallied a team-high four kills in the stanza.
St. John's dominated the fourth set, 25-16. The Red Storm took a commanding 10-3 lead and kept the momentum throughout the frame. The team hit an outstanding .467 led by Jones' five kills on a .400 clip.
Fueled by three Erin Jones kills tied the decisive fifth set at four points apiece. Ahead 6-5 a few points later, the Johnnies exploded for a 7-1 run to move ahead 13-6. The Red Storm closed the match on a Rastelli kill to take a 15-9 victory. The Johnnies hit .348 in the final set
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena for a three-match homestand starting with Marquette Friday night at 7 p.m.
