Red Storm drops to 3-2 in BIG EAST play
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team was unable to stop the lethal No. 18 Marquette offensive attack and fell in straight sets on Friday night at Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, No. 18 Marquette (14-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) extends its winning streak to 12 and remains at the top of the BIG EAST standings.
Rachele Rastelli led the Red Storm (12-6, 3-2 BIG EAST) attack with 13 kills and four blocks. Magda Stambrowska notched a team-high five blocks and seven kills. Giorgia Walther also tallied double-digit kills, adding 11 for the Johnnies. The NCAA's leader in total assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied 37 helpers in the match.
Beginning the match with a back-and-forth battle, Maquette took charge when the Golden Eagles rattled off a 4-0 run to take the 6-2 lead. With the rally forcing the Johnnies to burn a timeout, Stambrowska and Kowalczyk snapped the run with a block. However, the Golden Eagles continued to cruise in the opening frame, never relinquishing the lead before downing the Red Storm 25-17. Rastelli led the Johnnies with five kills during the opening set.
In the second stanza, the teams went point-for-point until Marquette scored four straight to hold the 8-5 advantage. Lucrezia Lodi broke up the rally following a Red Storm timeout, but St. John's continued to trail the opposition. Late in the set, St. John's tallied four-consecutive points to cut the Johnnies deficit to 23-22. However, a block by Hattie Bray and a kill from Aubrey Hamilton sealed the 25-23 defeat for the Red Storm.
Marquette jumped out to an 8-5 lead to start the third set, forcing St. John's to use a timeout. The Johnnies continued to struggle, trailing 19-11, before an 8-2 Johnnies run put St. John's within one. A Marquette attack error tied the match at 24 all, but two Golden Eagle kills secured the 26-24 victory for Marquette in the third frame and closed the match in straight sets. Six of Lodi's team-high 11 digs were recorded in the final stanza.
St. John's will attempt to split the weekend, with a 4 p.m. contest against DePaul on Saturday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena on ESPN3.
