St. John’s to Host Marquette and DePaul This Weekend

Red Storm has won nine of its last 10 matches
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2022) – After splitting its first BIG EAST road trip at Villanova and Georgetown, St. John's returns home this weekend to kick off a three-match homestand. The Johnnies will open the action Friday night against No. 18 Marquette at 7 p.m. before facing off against DePaul the following afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Red Storm (12-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) returns to Queens riding a hot hand, having won nine of its last ten matches, including three in straight sets. St. John's is currently tied for third place in the BIG EAST standings with Seton Hall and Xavier, as all three teams enter the third weekend of conference play with a league record of 3-1.
Sophomore Wiktoria Kowalczyk has dominated the headlines for much of the 2022 season, leading the NCAA and BIG EAST with 775 total assists. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Rachele Rastelli has been having a stellar season as well, pacing the BIG EAST in points and earning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 26. Rastelli continues to climb up the St. John's all-time statistical leaderboards, as she has cracked the top five in total attacks, kills, and service aces. Furthermore, she ranks sixth among active NCAA Division I players with 1,672 career kills. She also sits 17th among active Division I players with 4,025 career attacks.
Led by Kowalczyk and Rastelli, the Red Storm tops the nation in both total kills (964) and assists (899). Individually, Rastelli (257) and Giorgia Walther (251) rank 14th and 18th, respectively, in total kills. St. John's is one of only two teams in the nation alongside UMBC to place multiple players in the top 50 for total kills.
On the defensive side of the court, St. John's allows a league-low 10.06 digs per set, which is three digs per set lower than the next best team. St. John's 2.29 blocks per set are second best in the BIG EAST.
Currently on an 11-match winning streak, No. 18 Marquette (13-1, 4-0 BIG EAST) sits tied at the top of the conference standings with Creighton after a perfect start to league play. All four of those wins came in Milwaukee. During the four match span, Marquette has only dropped one set.
Golden Eagle Freshman Hattie Bray was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after hitting .545 over the weekend with a season-high 11 kills against Providence. Carsen Murray tops the conference in hitting percentage at .394 and is averaging 1.14 blocks per set. Marquette's setter, Yadhira Anchante, is third in the BIG EAST with 10.25 assists per frame. The Golden Eagles allow a league-low 11.22 kills per set and lead the conference with 14.20 kills per frame.
Marquette leads the all-time series with St. John's, 21-6. The Golden Eagles won the last meeting against the Red Storm, a five-set marathon in Carnesecca Arena in 2021.
After dropping its first two matches of BIG EAST play, DePaul used a pair of 3-1 home wins against Providence and UConn to even its conference record. Junior Rachel Krasowski earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after surpassing 1,000 career digs and averaging 5.38 digs per set in the two victories. She ranks second in the conference logging 5.13 digs per set on the season. Jill Pressly leads the team and is fourth in the BIG EAST with 3.87 points per set. Her team-high 3.52 kills per set are fifth in the conference.
St. John's leads the all-time series with DePaul, 18-8. The Blue Demons won both contests last season, snapping a five match win streak for the Red Storm in the series.
For the 50th anniversary of Title IX, players and coaches will be wearing Title IX shirts at Friday's match. The first 200 fans will receive a complimentary ticket to the January 31st women's basketball game against Seton Hall.
Saturday night, the team will be sporting pink shirts in support of Breast Cancer awareness, and the first 100 fans will receive a free pink umbrella. Two pink gift baskets will be raffled off with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness.
