Red Storm evens its BIG EAST record at 2-2-2
QUEENS, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Adrian Roseth scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute, lifting the St. John's men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over DePaul on Wednesday night at Belson Stadium.
With the win, the Red Storm (4-6-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) picked up three crucial points in a bunched BIG EAST table, moving from seventh place into fifth. The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the conference tournament.
Roseth's game-winner, his first of the year, came off assists from Wesley Leggett and Antek Sienkiel. Leggett's helper marked his team-leading fourth of the season.
Einar Lye opened the scoring from St. John's, converting in the 29th minute off a pass from Nigel Griffith. Lye's goal was his second in as many games and his third in the team's last five matches.
Inserted into the starting lineup in warmups following an injury to Ryan Foley, freshman goalkeeper Zenden Hart performed exceptionally despite the short notice, logging a season-high six saves to pick up his third collegiate win.
On the evening, St. John's outshot DePaul, 18-11, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
St. John's first dangerous scoring chances came in the 19th minute, as DePaul keeper Gandhi Cruz turned aside a Brandon Knapp header off a corner kick before forcing Connor Mucchetti's rebound try to miss wide.
After Cruz made a diving stop on Sienkiel in the 27th, the Red Storm broke through with the evening's first goal in the 29th. Griffith beat his defender down the right side of the box before sending a centering pass into the box. A closely guarded Sienkiel deftly allowed the ball to pass under his foot in favor of wide-open Lye near the penalty spot, as the senior beat the keeper and put the Johnnies ahead 1-0.
DePaul (3-4-5, 0-2-3 BIG EAST) evened the score at one apiece less than five minutes later thanks to a St. John's own goal.
The Red Storm nearly regained the lead before halftime, as the Johnnies were awarded a penalty kick in the 43rd minute following a DePaul handball in the box. Cruz, however, guess correctly and denied Knapp his third goal of the year.
Leggett narrowly missed putting the Red Storm on top in the 65th minute, but Cruz clipped his shot, resulting in a Red Storm corner. Sienkiel sent a left-footed in-swinger to the head of Leggett, who batted it down in front and allowed Roseth to poke it past the keeper and put St. John's ahead for good.
With his team back in front and time winding down, Hart made saves in the 68th, 71st and 77th minutes to preserve the St. John's advantage, allowing the Johnnies to hold on for a 2-1 win.
St. John's will have a week off before its next match, returning to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Providence. Kick-off from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FloFC.
