Red Storm will look to extend unbeaten streak to four
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a week off from competition, the St. John's men's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday night at Providence. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FloFC. Mike Mancuso will have the call from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The Red Storm begins the home stretch of its regular season slate riding a three-match unbeaten streak. After securing draws against then-No. 12 Xavier and Creighton, the Johnnies earned their second conference victory of the campaign last Wednesday night against DePaul at Belson Stadium. Einar Lye and Adrian Roseth each found the back of the net in the 2-1 win, while Zenden Hart made a season-high six saves.
On Monday, Hart was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this fall while Lye earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Hart currently ranks inside the top three of the BIG EAST in both goals against average (0.78) and save percentage (.808). Lye, a two-time All-BIG EAST pick during his St. John's career, has scored in back-to-back matches and three of his last five appearances overall.
Providence (2-2-3, 9 points) and St. John's (2-2-2, 8 points) enter their Wednesday match ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the BIG EAST table. The top six teams in the final regular season standings earn a bid to the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, the semifinals and finals of which will be held at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
Of the Red Storm's four remaining regular season matches, three will be contested on the road. After taking on the Friars, St. John's will travel to Butler this coming weekend before hosting longtime BIG EAST rival Connecticut at Belson Stadium on Oct. 29. The Johnnies will then close the regular season at Marquette on Nov. 2.
As of the latest NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, all 11 BIG EAST teams rank inside the top 100 in the country.
The Friars, the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST according to the league's coaches, enter the contest with an overall record of 4-4-5 after knocking off Butler, 2-1, on Saturday night in Providence. Gil Santos, who earned a spot on Monday's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Ramzi Qawasmy provided the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 53rd.
Junior forward Gevork Diarbian, who assisted on Santos' goal against Butler, is the Friars' leading point producer with three goals and four assists on the season. Santos and Qawasmy are also tied for the team lead with three goals apiece.
Lukas Burns started the first 11 games of the season in goal for Providence, but graduate student Rimi Olatunji has played each of the last two matches, allowing one goal in each appearance. He stopped four shots in a 1-0 loss to Georgetown before logging three saves in the win over Butler.
St. John's enters Wednesday's contest with a 21-11-4 record all-time against Providence dating back to their first meeting in 1987.
The Johnnies dominated the early part of the series history, rattling off 15 straight wins from 1989 to 2004 as part of a larger 23-game unbeaten streak ranging from 1989-2009. The Friars responded by going 8-0-1 against the Red Storm from 2013-19 before St. John's snapped the skid with a 2-0 road win at then-No. 13 Providence on March 10, 2021. Last fall, Providence's Paulo Lima scored in the 102nd minute to give the Friars a 1-0 double overtime win at Belson Stadium, snapping a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Red Storm.
Both St. John's and Providence would go on to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Red Storm advanced to the second round while the Friars fell to Georgetown in the round of 16.
