Three Johnnies tally goals in triumph over Bulldogs
INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 13, 2022) – St. John's women's soccer triumphed over Butler, 3-1, at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl on Thursday afternoon.
Nicole Gordon, Jessica Garziano and Ava Collins each recorded goals in the victory at Butler (6-7-1, 3-3-0 BIG EAST). Melina Couzis and Molly Feighan amassed two assists each during the Red Storm (7-4-4, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) win.
The match marked the Johnnies' sixth match with multiple goals and the first logged during BIG EAST play. The three tallies were the most scored by the Johnnie offense since the team blanked Central Connecticut State, 3-0, on Sept. 5.
The victory marked the second-straight road win for the Red Storm squad. St. John's previously topped Providence, 1-0, last Sunday.
Gina Muzi made her 15th-straight start between the pipes, allowing the one goal and making one stop. Anna Pierce played all 90 minutes in goal for Butler, allowing three goals while posting one save.
The Bulldogs got on the board first, recording a tally in the 22nd minute. Arianna Jalics sent a rocket over the head of Muzi and into the top right corner of the goal, giving Butler the 1-0 edge.
The Red Storm wasted no time following the score as Garziano powered in the equalizer just five minutes later. Couzis found the Melville, N.Y., native just outside the box and the Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree sent a lethal blast into the top right corner for the equalizer.
Following the tally, the teams battled back-and-forth for possession and after a Bulldogs throw in during the 39th minute, Couzis found Feighan with room to run. The Oklahoma transfer dribbled down the field before dishing the ball to Collins, who netted her shot into the bottom of the goal for the Johnnies' second score of the match.
Leading 2-1 coming out of the break, Isabelle Aviza looked to get in on the action in the 50th minute, sending a blast to the bottom left of the net. Pierce made the diving stop, stifling the senior's attempt.
In the 56th minute, the Red Storm got on the board once more as Feighan found Garziano on the left side of the field. The midfielder threaded a pass to Gordon inside the box, and the forward guided the ball past the keeper and into the bottom of the net for the Johnnies' third strike of the match.
Shots favored the Bulldogs 3-1 following the St. John's tally, but each attempt missed the mark. Kayla Mesaros had the final look for the Johnnies in the 70th minute. The graduate student's attempt missed high, but the two-goal advantage held as St. John's came away with the 3-1 victory.
The Red Storm returns home for a battle with No. 22 Xavier at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network
