Gina Muzi logged her seventh shutout of the season against the Musketeers
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team hung tough with 22nd-ranked Xavier to earn a 0-0 draw at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Xavier came into Sunday's matchup ranked second in the conference with a league mark of 5-0-1. The Red Storm became the second team, along with then-No. 17 Georgetown, to earn a point against a vaunted Musketeers squad.
The Johnnies extended their undefeated streak to four straight matches, earning two wins and two draws against BIG EAST opponents during that span.
Gina Muzi continued her excellent season between the pipes for the Red Storm, tallying her seventh shutout of the season and her fourth in conference play. The senior out of Delafield, Wis., logged three saves on Sunday to improve her save percentage to .776 and lower her goals against average to 0.72.
Five different players registered a shot as Brooke Boyd, Jessica Garziano, Molly Feighan, Jailene DeJesus and Lauryn Tran each tallied an attempt on net.
The Musketeers (11-2-3, 5-0-2 BIG EAST) controlled possession for much of the early stages of Sunday's contest, leading in shot attempts, 3-0, through the first 25 minutes of play. Muzi was called upon to make one stop on a low shot by Ella Rogers in the fifth minute.
St. John's (7-4-5, 4-2-2 BIG EAST) found its first offensive opportunity in the 30th minute when DeJesus fired a ball at the cage, but Xavier's Maria Galley was able to stop the attempt and keep the game scoreless.
After a shot by Xavier that was wide of the mark, the Red Storm found its best scoring chance in the 34th minute as Garziano made an incisive run through the Musketeer defense and blasted a shot towards the top of the net. Galley made an impressive leap to paw the attempt over the bar and hold the Johnnies to a corner. The two teams jogged to the halftime locker room locked at zero.
A defensive battle ensued in the second 45 minutes with both teams registering one shot each. After Muzi saved an attempt on goal by Grace Blumfeldt in the 71st minute, the Red Storm defense did not allow a shot for the remaining 19 minutes of action on Sunday to earn a scoreless draw and a crucial point against the 22nd-ranked team in the nation.
The Johnnies will be back in action next Sunday when they welcome conference foe Marquette to Belson Stadium for its final home game of the 2022 regular season. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
