Red Storm paces field after first day of competition
HAMPDEN, Mass. - The St. John's men's golf team sits in first place after the first day of competition at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
The Red Storm came into the clubhouse at 13-over par 301 to close out the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Connecticut concluded day one in second place, just three strokes behind the Johnnies. Lafayette, Rhode Island and Seton Hall are locked in a three-way tie for third place, posting a 305.
Peicheng Chen paced the Red Storm, carding a 2-over 72 in the first round to close out the opening round tied for seventh. Ryan Rittberger and Tyler Gerbavsits are locked in for 12th place as the duo each posted a 73 to finish a stroke behind Chen. Gerbavists led all competitors with 15 pars while Rittberger's four birdies ranked second in the field.
Jack Simon finished the first day tied for 23rd place. The Sparta, N.J., native signed off on a 77 on the first day of competition. Rounding out the Johnnie squad was Brendan Smith as the fifth year tallied a 78 during the first round.
The Red Storm will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Live scoring for the event will be available via GolfStat and all results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each day.
