Red Storm leads the way heading into final round
HAMPDEN, Mass. - The St. John's men's golf team continues to lead the pack at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse. The Red Storm carded a 294 as a team on Monday, posting a 595 through 36 holes.
Rhode Island came into the clubhouse in second place, signing off on a 597 through two rounds, LIU follows closely behind in third place, sitting two strokes behind the Rams and four strokes off the Johnnie lead.
As a team, St. John's tallied 18 birdies during the second day of competition. The Johnnie squad's 28 birdies for the tournament ranks third in the field while the squad's 103 pars put the Red Storm tied for second in the category.
Peicheng Chen shot a 1-over, 73 during the second round, placing the sophomore in seventh place for the tournament with a combined 147. Ryan Rittberger sits two strokes behind the Beijing native as the senior signed off on a 2-over, 74 for the day. His combined mark of 149 has the Greenlawn, N.Y., native locked in a tie for ninth place.
Tyler Gerbavsits and Brendan Smith came into the clubhouse tied for 13th with each golfer posting a combined 150. Gerbavsits shot a 3-over, 75 for the day. Smith tallied a team-best six birdies during the second round when he carded an even 72. His nine birdies for the tournament are tied for first in the field.
Rounding out the Johnnie squad was Jack Simon, who signed off on a 76 for his second round. His combined 153 puts the Sparta, N.J., native tied for 28th place.
