TULSA, Okla.– St. John's men's tennis graduate student Diogo Marques rose to the occasion tallying three victories against the nation's best to reach the Round of 32 in the pre-qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships.
Marques and teammate Axel Vila Antuna both competed in the 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., over the weekend.
Marques got off to a good start with a lengthy three-set victory over Vanderbilt's Slim Troost, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. He continued his success in the evening portion, sweeping Cal Berkely's Emil Carl Overbeck 6-4, 6-4 to advance into Sunday's action.
In the Round of 64, the Setubal, Portugal native continued his strong performance in a tight-knit contest with Santa Clara's Guillaume Dalmasso. In the first set, Marques pulled out a narrow victory, 7-5, to jump in front in the early going. The battle remained close as he captured the tiebreak second set 7-6 (11-9) to clinch a win to move onto the Round of 32.
In his final match, Marques was outlasted by Justin Schlageter of Oklahoma, 2-6, 2-6, marking the furthest a Red Storm player has advanced in this event since Aditya Vashistha made it into the main draw in 2019.
