Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna Conclude Successful Weekend at ITA Super Regionals

The prolific duo made it to the semifinal round of the doubles bracket
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- St. John's men's tennis standouts Axel Vila Antuna and Diogo Marques reached the semifinal round of the ITA Super Regionals, held at Harvard this weekend.
The duo tallied two wins before falling in the semifinal round in a field that featured the top players from all over the Northeast region. Marques also competed in the 32-player singles competition recording a victory before falling in the Round of 16.
In their first match on Friday, the pairing cruised past Bryant's Diego Serra Sparrow and Leonardo Mileikowsky with ease, 8-2. In the next round, the Red Storm duo met JJ Bianchi and Max Motlagh of Boston College and moved past the Eagles pairing, 8-4, to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
On Sunday, Vila Antuna and Marques fell to the no. 21 ranked doubles team in the nation in Columbia's Max Westphal and Theo Winegar, 2-6, 6-7 (5-7).
In singles action, Marques started off with a straight-set decision over Masato Perrera of Harvard, 7-5, 6-1. The next match for the graduate student presented a tall task as he met no. 10 singles player in the country in Columbia's Alex Kotzen. The Setubal, Portugal native battled hard and swept the second set, 6-0, but ultimately fell, 2-6, 6-0, 4-6.
