Red Storm squad finishes first at 54-hole event
HAMPDEN, Mass. – The St. John's men's golf team earned its first title of the season as the Red Storm emerged from a field of 14 teams to win the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass.
The victory for the Red Storm squad marks the team's first of the year and the first under head coach Phil Wildermuth. The Johnnies finished ahead of three other BIG EAST squads including the Pirates, who took home the BIG EAST Championship in 2022.
"It took all five players to get this win!" Wildermuth said with excitement. "Tyler birdied two very difficult finishing holes today. Ryan stepped up big this week. He birdied the par-5, 14th hole, then drained a long putt on the 15th for back-to-back birdies in the final round as well. Brendan had six birdies in his second round and a top-20 finish."
The Johnnies posted their best round at the 54-hole event as the team shot a combined 290 during the final round of the three-day tournament to finish with a combined score of 885. Seton Hall came in second place with a score of 889 and Rhode Island carded an 891 as a team to claim third.
Tyler Gerbavsits led the way in the final round, signing off on a season-best 3-under, 69. The Huntington, N.Y., native carded a 219 for the event to place fifth overall over the three rounds. Following a stroke behind Gerbavsits was Ryan Rittberger who took sixth with a 4-over, 220. The senior shot a 1-under, 71, during his final round, tallying four birdies on the day.
Brendan Smith came into the clubhouse with a 3-over, 75 for his final 18 holes, finishing the event with a score of 225 to tie for 18thplace. Jack Simon also went 3-over for the day as the Sparta, N.J., native carded a 228 for the tournament to finish tied for 27th. Rounding out the Red Storm squad was Peicheng Chen, who tied for 31st with a combined 229.
"This is a very close team, a family really," Wildermuth said. "Guys step up for each other. When one doesn't have his best stuff, there's always someone to help. Everyone is having a blast and working hard."
St. John's will look to continue its momentum when it returns to action at the Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club on Oct. 21-22.
