St. John’s to Travel to Seton Hall Before Hosting Butler to End the Week

Red Storm are currently tied for fourth in the BIG EAST Standings
QUEENS, N.Y. (NOV. 1, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team hopes to recover after facing the top three teams in the conference in its last three matches. The Red Storm will travel to Orange, N.J. for a midweek Wednesday night match, and will conclude the week with a Friday night match hosting Butler.
With the BIG EAST Championships extending its field of teams to six, the Red Storm are currently tied for fourth in the standings, with a 7-5 record in conference play.
In Sunday's match against Creighton, Rachele Rastelli notched 17 kills surpassing Jackie Ahlers for the second most kills in St. John's history. The graduate student is leading the team with her experience, as well as statistically on the court. Rastelli ranks in the top three in both points and kills in the BIG EAST, and is in the top 25 individuals in those categories in the nation as well.
Additionally, sophomore Wiktoria Kowalczyk and Giorgia Walther have been providing a youth spark to the team. Walther also ranks in the top three in kills and points in the conference and is in the top 40 for those statistics nationally. Kowalczyk ranks third in the conference in assists per set, and third in the NCAA with 1,046 total assists.
As a team the Red Storm have grown a reputation as one of the best offensive and blocking teams in the country. The Johnnies rank third in total assists and fifth in kills. On the defensive side of the court, the team's 226 blocks in tied for the 27th most in the nation, and leads the BIG EAST. St. John's also allows a league-low 10.47 opponent digs per set which is caused by the high kill and block rate and shorter rallies fielded by the offensive attack.
Seton Hall enters the week after being swept in both matches last weekend hosting both No. 15 Creighton and Xavier. The Pirates have dropped their last seven conference matches, and currently rank seventh in the BIG EAST, trailing Butler by two games in the standings.
The Pirates have been one of the best serving teams in the conference ranking third with 1.52 service aces per set led by Asli Subasili's fourth in the league .38 service aces. Subasili is also fourth in the BIG EAST with 1.02 blocks per frame.
Jenna Walsh leads the team with 293 kills. Her 3.60 points per frame is ninth in the league and her 3.28 kills in conference play also ranks ninth.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Seton Hall, 20-18. Earlier this season, the Red Storm earned a 3-1 victory in Carnesecca Arena.
The Bulldogs were able to salvage a 1-1 week after losing to No. 16 Marquette in straight sets, and then overcoming DePaul in five sets to split the weekend. Butler trailed 2-1 before winning the last two sets 25-16 and 15-13 against the Blue Demons.
Amina Shackleford notched her first two double-doubles of the season this weekend to earn a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection. The sophomore recorded 12 digs and 12 kills against Marquette and 16 digs and 15 kills while hosting DePaul.
Butler is the second best blocking team in the conference behind the Red Storm, tallying 2.30 blocks per set. the Bulldogs also allow the third lowest opponent hitting percentage (.191). In conference play this season, Butler's 17.09 digs per set ranks second. St. John's held the Bulldogs to 9.0 digs per set earlier this season in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The BIG EAST leader in digs, Jaymeson Kinley ranks 10th nationally with 5.41 digs per set.
