St. John’s Drops Tight Battle to Seton Hall in Four Sets

Red Storm hosts Butler on Friday night
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (Nov. 2, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team dropped a tightly battled four set match against Seton Hall on Wednesday night in Walsh Gymnasium.
The Red Storm (16-10, 7-6) now occupy sole possession of fifth place in the BIG EAST, and the Pirates (14-11, 5-8) rank seventh.
St. John's had three players with double-doubles for the first time this season. Freshman Lucrezia Lodi notched her team-high seventh double-double of the season with kills and digs. Giorgia Walther tallied her third double-double of the season registering 18 kills and 17 digs. Erin Jones recorded her second double-double on the season, leading the team with a season-high 27 assists, and adding 11 digs.
Freshman Magda Stambrowska led the team in both service aces (4) and blocks (6).
St. John's out-dug Seton Hall 75-65.
The first frame was tightly contested throughout its entirety. St. John's broke out for the first three points, the largest lead in the set. Seton Hall tied the score at seven before a point-for-point battle ensued. Trailing 22-20, coach Persico called a timeout to rally her squad. The Johnnies tied the score after two quick points and forced Seton Hall to use its last timeout. The Pirates scored three consecutive points after the timeout to take the first stanza. Lodi led the team with 6 kills, 6 digs and a service ace in the first frame. The first set featured 10 ties and five lead changes.
After the Red Storm started the second set up 4-1, the Pirates were able to tie the score at 11. Seton Hall strung together six consecutive points to take a 19-14 lead. Trailing 23-19, the Red Storm used a 4-0 spurt to tie the set at 23. The Red Storm were able to stave off the first Pirates set point, but ultimately fell 26-24 in the second stanza.
The Johnnies controlled the third set, never allowing the Pirates to take the lead. Seton Hall tied the frame at eight, and the Red Storm responded with a 4-0 burst to establish control. The Pirates battled back, tying the set at 12 before a 5-0 burst by the Johnnies gave St. John's a 17-12 lead. Seton Hall threatened knotting the score at 18 for the final time. The Red Storm were able to close out the match punctuated by Walther kill, 25-22.
The fourth stanza did not disappoint, producing yet another tight battle ending in extra points. The point-for-point fourth set featured six more ties and two lead changes. Seton Hall led 21-16, making the Red Storm's chance doubtful. However, the resilient Johnnies battled back tying the set at 23, after back-to-back aces by Stambrowska. Tying for the final time at 24, the Pirates won consecutive points to take the match.
St. John's will conclude the week with a Friday night match against Butler in Carnesecca Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
