QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will look to win its third straight game to start the season on Tuesday night when it hosts the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut State.
Tip-off from Carnesecca Arena is set for 7 p.m. on FS2. Scott Graham and Jim Spanarkel will have the call from Queens.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app.
Fans can purchase two tickets to Tuesday's game for the special price of $22. The first 500 fans in the bulding will receive a voucher for a free taco at Qdoba.
The Red Storm (2-0) will look to start 3-0 for the third time under the direction of Head Coach Mike Anderson. The Johnnies have run away with each of their first two games, handling preseason NEC favorite Merrimack by 25 points on Nov. 7 before pulling away from Lafayette for an 83-68 victory on Saturday.
Aside from some early turnover woes in the season opener against the Warriors, the Red Storm's offense has been sensational so far in 2022-23. As a team, the Johnnies are averaging 90.0 points while shooting 54.6 perecent from the floor and 43.5 percent from deep. They have made 85.7 percent of their free throws and are dishing out more than 20 assists per game.
Leading the way through two games is David Jones, who followed up a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double against Merrimack by scoring 20 points against Lafayette. For his efforts, Jones was named to the season's first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Last season as a sophomore at DePaul, Jones earned three weekly honor roll nods on his way to finishing among the top 10 of the league in both scoring and rebounding.
The Red Storm's other highly touted transfer, Andre Curbelo has been steadily productive in the early going of his St. John's tenure. The former top-50 recruit out of Long Island Lutheran and the 2021 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, Curbelo is averaging 11.5 points per game on 64.3 percent shooting and leading the team with 6.5 assists per contest.
Joel Soriano, who posted just one double-double as a junior in 2021-22, has recorded two in as many tries to start his senior season. The Yonkers product tallied 12 points and 11 boards against Merrimack before notching 13 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday against Lafayette. Soriano, who played his first two collegiate seasons at nearby Fordham, had 13 double-doubles in his final 20 games with the Rams.
Central Connecticut State (0-2) comes to Queens looking for its first win of the season after suffering a two-point setback to Quinnipiac at home on Sunday. The Blue Devils led by 10 in the second half before seeing their advantage slip away.
Junior guard Kellen Amos is the team's leading scorer, averaging 18.5 points per outing. The Binghamton transfer posted 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including four triples, in a season-opening loss to UMass before scoring 13 against the Bobcats on Sunday.
Andre Snoddy, an NEC All-Rookie Team selection last season, scored a team-high 17 points in Sunday's loss.
St. John's and Central Connecticut State will meet for the fourth time in the history of the two programs, a series history that has seen the Red Storm register a 32.7-point average margin of victory.
The first meeting between the two teams was one for the record books, as Malik Sealy scored 43 points in a 135-92 win on Nov. 24, 1990, during the Lapchick Tournament. The team's 135 points still stand as a single-game program record, while Sealy's 43 points endured as a Carnesecca Arena/Alumni Hall record until Shamorie Ponds poured in 44 against Marquette on Feb. 10, 2018.
St. John's then defeated the Blue Devils, 80-55, on Nov. 14, 2017, and 87-57 on Nov. 9, 2019, in the program's second game under Anderson. Mustapha Heron led the way with 30 points in that most recent victory.
After taking on Central Connecticut State, the Red Storm will host Nebraska on Thursday in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. The game, which is part of the annual showcase pitting the BIG EAST against the Big Ten, will begin at 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
