Red Storm Head Women’s Soccer Coach receives multi-year extension
QUEENS, N.Y.- After leading the Red Storm to its second consecutive BIG EAST semifinal appearance, Head Coach Ian Stone has received a contract extension from St. John's University that will keep the two-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year in Queens for multiple seasons to come.
"We are excited and grateful to have Ian Stone leading our women's soccer program into the future," said Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "Coach Stone has run a first-class program in his 29 years as head coach at St. John's. His teams and student-athletes have performed remarkably well on the field, as well as in the classroom and community. His care for student-athletes and love for the University is what really sets him apart. There is no doubt in my mind the future is bright for St. John's Women's Soccer."
In 2022, Stone led the Red Storm to a 7-5-7, including an undefeated record at home in BIG EAST play, and a second straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship. The Johnnies advanced to the semifinal round for the second time in as many seasons.
The season before, Stone authored his most successful season in his 29 years at St. John's, guiding the Red Storm to the BIG EAST final and to the NCAA Round of 16, the first appearance in school history.
"I want to thank the St. John's University Athletic Administration for placing their continued confidence in me," said Stone. "Our program is in a really good place right now from all aspects. Moving forward, the future is very bright for St. John's University Women's Soccer, and I am energized by this decision."
Stone is the winningest coach in program history, amassing 266 wins in his 29 years at the helm in Queens. Stone also boasts the most wins of any active coach in the BIG EAST conference.
Stone has mentored some of the top talent in the conference in his time in Queens. Under Stone's direction in 2022, Brooke Boyd, Jessica Garziano and Emily Riggins all received postseason recognition from the BIG EAST, and Melina Couzis and Katherine Turner were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.
Stone has also coached some of the best players in the country, including program legends Rachel Daly and Zsani Kajan. Daly holds nearly every single offensive record in the storied history of the women's soccer program and earned several accolades in her illustrious career, including being name BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year twice and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2013. Kajan also made a massive impact during her five years at St. John's, joining Daly as the only other Johnnie to be named league offensive player of the year twice.
