Red Storm picked to finish sixth in preseason poll
QUEENS, N.Y. – Infielder Kevin Michaels and outfielder David Glancy have been tabbed to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for the first time in their respective careers, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Michaels enjoyed a breakout debut season in 2022, landing on the All-BIG EAST First Team for his efforts. The Encinitas, Calif., native hit .330 and reached base at a .389 clip in 49 starts for the Red Storm. He led the team with 24 extra-base hits, including seven home runs.
The Johnnies' infielder displayed a penchant for hitting in bunches, tallying five hits on two separate occasions, most notably when he hit for the cycle against Sacred Heart on March 20, the first by a Red Storm hitter in 15 years. Michaels was also the leading run producer for the St. John's offense with a squad-best 46 RBIs, driving in two or more runners on 13 occasions, three of which featured four or more RBIs.
Glancy returns for a fourth season in Queens after registering a solid redshirt sophomore campaign last spring. One of two hitters to start all 55 games last season, the Red Storm outfielder was the team leader in the power department, belting 11 home runs, including three in one game against Hofstra on March 22.
The Neptune, N.J., native was just the second St. John's batter in a decade to hit three round trippers in a game, joining Mike Antico in 2019. Glancy finished the year hitting .294 with an .894 OPS and earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors on April 25 after hitting .438 against Fairleigh Dickinson and Butler.
Two-time defending BIG EAST Champions Connecticut was picked to finish first by a vote of the league's coaches, followed by Creighton, Xavier, Georgetown and Seton Hall, respectively. The Red Storm followed in the preseason rankings, and Villanova and Butler rounded out the poll.
St. John's has won nine conference tournament titles dating back to 1985, four more than the next highest total of any current league member (UConn - 5). The Johnnies have also taken home a league-record nine BIG EAST Regular Season Championships and appeared in 10 of the last 18 NCAA Tournaments dating back to 2004. The Red Storm's 37 NCAA appearances are tied for 10th all-time alongside USC and Oklahoma, six of which have resulted in a trip to the College World Series.
