St. John's (13-10, 5-7 BIG EAST) will look to make it three wins in its last four games when the Huskies visit "The World's Most Famous Arena" on Sunday. On Tuesday, the Johnnies saw a late comeback effort fall short against No. 15 Villanova, as the Red Storm cut a 20-point deficit to just three in the final minutes, but could not fully close the gap. Before falling to Wildcats, the Red Storm picked up back-to-back road wins for the first time this season, downing Georgetown at McDonough Arena before outlasting Butler in Hinkle Fieldhouse for the first time since 2014.
Despite his team coming out on the wrong end of Tuesday's decision against the Wildcats, Aaron Wheeler put on a career-best performance at "The Mecca." The Purdue transfer connected on 11 of his 17 shots, including a 6-of-10 showing from deep, to finish with 31 points, shattering his previous career-high of 17. The Stamford, Conn., native also grabbed seven boards and blocked a pair of shots. After averaging 4.5 points during non-conference play, Wheeler is now pouring in 13.9 points per game against BIG EAST opponents, good enough for ninth in the league. Wheeler is shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from three during conference action after connecting on just five of his 17 tries from deep during 10 non-league outings. With 212 points in 22 games this season, Wheeler is just eight points shy of tying his combined point total from his sophomore and junior seasons at Purdue, where he scored 220 points in 59 appearances for the Boilermakers.
Tuesday's loss to Villanova came without the services of Posh Alexander, who missed the game with an ankle sprain that he suffered in the second half of the Red Storm's win at Butler on Feb. 5. The reigning BIG EAST Freshman and Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Alexander has been sensational this season for the Johnnies. The Brooklyn native ranks second on the team and eighth in the conference with 14.9 points per game while leading the squad and sitting second in the league with 5.2 assists per outing.
In Alexander's absence, Dylan Addae-Wusu and Stef Smith shouldered most of the ball-handling duties, combining for eight assists against the Wildcats. Alexander and Addae-Wusu, former high school teammates at Our Saviour Lutheran in the Bronx, are the league's top assist duo, combining for 9.4 helpers per game. Nationally, the Red Storm ranks fourth in assists, averaging 18.4 dimes per contest.
UConn (16-7, 7-5 BIG EAST) heads to the Big Apple for its first BIG EAST regular season game in New York since 2013 on the heels of a 74-68 loss at Xavier on Friday night. Cole poured in 22 points in just 29 minutes to lead the Huskies. Connecticut is now 3-4 in true road games, including a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Villanova.
Sunday will mark the second meeting in just over a month between the Johnnies and the Huskies, as UConn prevailed in overtime, 86-78, at Gampel Pavilion on Jan. 12. St. John's trailed by as many as 11 in the second before a late push gave the Red Storm a one-point lead with just four seconds to play in regulation. Connecticut tied the game with a 1-for-2 trip to the free throw line before pulling away in the extra period.
Prior to this season, St. John's had won four of its last five against UConn dating back to the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament. Last season, in the Huskies' first campaign back in the BIG EAST since 2012-13, the Red Storm won the lone meeting between the teams, a 74-70 win in Storrs.
St. John's is 36-29 all-time against UConn dating back to 1951.
This season, Cole leads the Huskies in scoring at 16.3 points per game and is the team's leading distributor with 4.4 helpers per outing. Sophomore forward Adama Sanogo, who had 26 points and 18 boards in his last game against the Johnnies, is averaging a near-double-double in BIG EAST play with 14.9 points and 9.8 boards per contest.
